If we get the paint on our old Corvette any smoother, even the dust will fall off by itself. We thought it was smooth to begin with, and it was, but then we used the Mothers California Gold Clay Bar on one fender and the trunk. We compared each of these panels to adjacent panels, and it was startling! Even though the paint is in good shape, we didn't realize how much grit and pollutants we were feeling before using the Clay Bar. Not only did it feel better, it looked better. Obviously if you remove material that has settled on the paint, you see the color better, and we did. After finishing up the remaining panels, we covered it with Mothers Carnuba Wax. That made it as slippery as an old pump handle on a frosty morning. How's that for slick?
Before using the Clay Bar kit, the car must be washed. At a recent Track Day event the Mothers reps gave us some of their new Spray Wash to try. Typically we are the fill-a-bucket-with-suds types, but this Spray Wash is much more convenient for car washes and definitely saves soap and water. Besides that, it works great.
This is not a time-consuming operation. Once we got the feel of it, we used the clay bar on the whole car in about a half-hour. Granted it's a Corvette, but even an Impala shouldn't take too long, and it's worth the extra time.
Use a fairly gentle spray,... Use a fairly gentle spray, then apply Trigger Wash using 3 or 4 squirts per quarter of the vehicle. At first we used too much, but as we went, it was obvious that this product goes a long way, so we started following the directions. Use a wash mitt or small, soft towel. What we preferred over bucket washing was that the Trigger Wash was always within reach and actually took less time and water to use. | Clay Bar Paint Saving System... Clay Bar Paint Saving System comes complete with clay bar, Showtime and carnuba cleaner wax, and everything you need after the wash, for which we used Mothers new Trigger Wash. Don't let us hear about your using dishwashing soap on your prized car! | Work on a 2-foot-by-2-foot... Work on a 2-foot-by-2-foot section, applying Showtime first as a lubricant. Then, with light pressure, rub the clay bar back and forth, overlapping the strokes, adding Showtime to keep the surface wet. You'll hear and feel the clay bar removing contaminants. Check for smoothness by feeling the surface and continue until all particles are removed. |
Wipe off the excess Showtime... Wipe off the excess Showtime with another of your soft, dry terry towels and move to other panels. | Finish off with the Carnuba... Finish off with the Carnuba liquid wax using a slightly moistened terry cloth. This is definitely the finishing touch and makes the whole job worthwhile. Check out the result. | After each panel the clay... After each panel the clay bar must be folded into a ball and kneaded flat. This keeps the contaminants from building up and presents a fresh surface on each panel. If the bar is ever dropped on the ground or floor, discard it as dirt particles may stick to it and damage your paint. |
