Most of the metal and other body parts on the former drag Camaro were subpar, including the 'glass L88-style hood, doors, fenders, nose, and valance. National Parts Depot supplied all the sheetmetal we needed, as well as bumpers, and hardware. All body pieces will need some massaging out of the box, but the NPD pieces were correct in the places they needed to be and that was the edges, which will ultimately determine the gap lines between fender and nose, fender and door, and fender and hood. We were impressed.

Next, we liberally applied body filler on the low spots, then block-sanded them to level. Ninety percent of the body filler we applied was sanded off to smooth the area and give the trunk lid, in this case, a nice, consistent arc from top to bottom and side to side. Body filler is an essential tool for bodywork, though it should not be used to fill in holes, remake corners, or fix large dents.

1971 Camaro Bodywork Door Cleanout
We cleaned out and prepped the frames for the new door skins we were going to install. As usual, a clean mating surface was necessary to create a bond between the two. Be careful handling the frame with the door skin off. The window is now exposed and can easily be broken during the process. Take your time and work smart so you won't have to work longer.

1971 Camaro Bodywork Repeated Process
The same process was completed on the rest of the car, which was surprisingly in good shape. Little work had to be done around the taillight bezels which we were certain was going to be a nightmare. A few trouble areas were the door jams and lower corners. But, unlike many cars from the era, rust has not taken over and forced us to replace the rear fenders or tail pieces.
