Before installing a torque converter, add fluid into its snout. ATI offers this advice on initial filling and priming: Jack the rear wheels 3 inches off the ground and install 4 quarts of fluid. If possible, turn the engine with the starter only until the transmission has picked up the fluid and 6 to 8 quarts of oil have been installed. Do not overfill! This method primes the pump and is especially important on engines that idle over 1,000 rpm. If the starter cannot turn the engine easily, start the engine at the lowest possible rpm and immediately complete the filling operation as quickly as possible. Run the transmission through all ranges with light throttle and recheck the fluid level. The level should be 1 pint low with the transmission in Neutral or Park and the car on level ground.
