Small Block Engine Bolt On Tests
Our next step up the performance ladder involved the installation of aset of excellent Holley SysteMax heads. The lightweight aluminum headsoffered 68c combustion chambers, a 2.02/1.60 valve package and 184ccintake ports to maximize flow.

In addition to the 20-degree Holley SysteMax heads, we performed a camupgrade as well by replacing the small PE246H can with a slightly wilder(but plenty streetable) XE268H profile. The XE268H cam offered a0.470/0.480 lift split, a 224/230 duration split (at 0.050) and a110-degree lobe separation angle. Naturally new lifters were employedwith the cam upgrade.

In the previous test, we had run the small-block with a set of ported882 castings and a mild PE246 cam. After swapping out the ported stockheads and Pure Energy 246 cam for the Holley Systemax heads and wilderXE268H cam, we were rewarded with a jump in power from 364 hp and 422lbs-ft of torque to 419 hp and 444 lbs-ft As is evident by the graph, the Holley heads and COMP Xtreme Energy cam improved the power outputthroughout the rev range.

After the installation of the Holley SysteMax aluminum heads and XE268Hcam, the power output of the 355 small-block jumped from 365 hp and 422lbs-ft to 419 hp and 444 lbs-ft. Note the use of an S&B air cleanersystem. This could make a wonderful low-buck street combo, but we wantedmore.

Not trusting the accuracy of the factory stamped steel rockers, weinstalled a set of 1.52 Pro Magnum roller rockers. The additional liftsupplied by the slight change in ratio combined with the consistentvalvetrain geometry added 7 to 8 hp.

Small Block Engine Bolt On Tests
While a 400-plus hp small-block would be a welcome addition to anyengine bay, we decided to take things one step further and shoot for 500ponies. The first step toward that goal was the installation of a set ofmore radical AFR 195 heads. Treated to the competition porting package, the AFR 195 heads flowed 282 cfm on the intake and 212 cfm on theexhaust.

Originally equipped with 68cc combustion chambers, the AFR 195 headswere milled to reduce the chamber size to 64 cc. This increased thestatic compression of our test motor to 10.0:1.

Working in conjunction with the new AFR heads and increased compressionwas this wild XR294HR hydraulic roller cam profile. A tad wild forstreet use, the XR294HR cam offered 0.540 intake lift, 0.562 exhaustlift and a 242/248 duration split with a 110-degree lobe separationangle.

Small Block Engine Bolt On Tests
Given the number of head swaps performed on this block, we should haveinstalled a set of ARP head studs instead of the ARP head bolts. We paidthe price and pulled the threads on one of the head bolt-holes. After aquick Helicoil, we were back in action.

Our need for speed brought out the greed as we performed an intake swaplooking to reach 550 hp. The single plane intake combined with a larger750 Mighty Demon carb improved the peak power output to 543 hp, but thepower curve was down below 5,000 rpm compared to the dual-plane.

Small Block Engine Bolt On Tests
Having run three sets of heads now with the stock stamped steel rockers,we finally replaced them with a set of 1.52 ratio roller rockers fromCOMP Cams. The added lift and improved accuracy improved the poweroutput from 5,000 rpm to 6,000 rpm but had little effect below thatpoint.

Small Block Engine Bolt On Tests
Looking to take a substantial jump in power, we installed a set of moreradical AFR 195 (competition ported) heads and much wilder XR295HR(hydraulic roller) cam. The AFR heads featured 64cc combustion chambersto increase the static compression ratio. The combination of the hot camand free-flowing AFR heads allowed our small-block to exceed 500 hp,with peak readings of 524 hp and 481 lbs-ft of torque. There was aslight trade off in power from 3,500 rpm to 4,000 rpm, but from thereout to 6,500 rpm the power gains were tremendous.

Small Block Engine Bolt On Tests
Getting a little greedy, we replaced the dual-plane Edelbrock PerformerRPM Air Gap intake with the single-plane Victor Jr. While thesingle-plane intake did improve the peak power output to 543 hp (using alarger 750 Mighty Demon carb), the power was down up to 5,000 rpm. Thedual-plane intake is tough to beat for most street applications. In mostinstances, you'd miss the 40 lbs-ft of torque more than you'd benefitfrom the extra 10 hp (the 750 carb was worth nearly 10 hp by itself).
