Fuel Injected Small Block - Flexing A Stiff Arm

Building An EFI 406 For The Everyday Drag

By Mike Petralia
Fuel Injected Small Block Combination

The first trip to Westech's dyno saw the 406 equipped for max torque with an Arizona Speed & Marine-modified TPI-style intake and two-bbl throttle body. This combination made almost 500 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm!

are the high-torque combination.

  • Fuel Injected Small Block Throttle Body
The second trip to the dyno saw a lot more horsepower with a new 1,000-cfm four-bbl throttle body on top of a modified single-plane Dart intake manifold with 36 lb-hr injectors. Without any other changes, the engine picked up almost 60 hp and lost only 5 lb-ft of peak torque with this combo, although the torque peak did move up 1,700 rpm.

  • Fuel Injected Small Block EFI Tuner
Westech owner and EFI tuner John Baechtel got everything programmed correctly for start up. Once the engine was fired, yours truly took over the fuel and spark mixture tuning to squeeze out every last ounce of power that could be found.

  • Fuel Injected Small Block Headers
Westech used full-length Sprint Car-style headers with mufflers for this test because the engine's owner didn't want to drill holes in his headers for the Exhaust Gas Temperature probes. All EFI systems of this type also need to run an O2 sensor, which can be seen at the bottom of the photo.
