1967 Chevelle Intake - Basically Speaking

Simple Engine Upgrades Make For Efficient Performance And Economy

1967 Chevelle Intake New Components
This turned out to be a great combination of low-buck performance upgrades. The Pertronix installation can be seen in this issue, as well.

1967 Chevelle Intake Stock 283 Engine
This engine will never look or sound the same again. Here is the bone-stock 283ci engine in all its glory. Hopefully switching to a four-barrel carb will give us more power, but what we really want is better economy and efficiency.

  • 1967 Chevelle Intake Engine
With the original intake and valve covers removed, all in all, the engine doesn't seem to be slugged up. Make sure to remove all traces of gasket material from all surfaces. This is the part of the process that needs to be perfect. The weird canister in the valley area is an internal breather that can be discarded and plugged as long as breathers are installed in the valve covers. We changed our valve covers, so this piece was discarded.

  • 1967 Chevelle Intake Manifold
With the intake gaskets held in place with a small amount of Permatex, the manifold can be carefully lowered into place. Make sure the seals at each end of the manifold stay in place, as they will want to move very easily.

  • 1967 Chevelle Intake Hardware
It is best to go ahead and replace all mounting hardware at this time. Bolts loose their strength after years of being under constant pressure. It is also a good idea to run a thread chaser or cleaner into each hole before installing the new bolts.

  • 1967 Chevelle Intake Plugs
Holley includes plugs for any unused vacuum or water holes. The temp sender was taken out of the original manifold and installed into the Holley intake with no problem.

  • 1967 Chevelle Intake Components Change
A new water neck, thermostat, and hoses should also be on the list of changes. These parts are just too important and cheap not to be changed. A new water pump was also installed for even more peace of mind.

  • 1967 Chevelle Intake Base Gasket
Following the carburetor's instruction book, install the base gasket, then sealing ring (steel), and another gasket. A base gasket leak can be a trying problem, so following these steps will be helpful in the end.

In fact, the stock linkage fit and worked perfect with the new Holley carb. We did have to lengthen the kick-down linkage about a 1.5 inches to reach its new placement on the carb.

  • 1967 Chevelle Intake Start Up
Once the Pertronix upgrades were done, the old 283 started right up. The new Holley carb only needs one turn on the idle screw to adjust for everyday driving. We knew there was a major change in the way the engine was running with a slightly louder exhaust, probably from the higher volume of air and fuel now being used in the cylinders. The added torque was also immediately felt, meaning a job well done all around.

  • 1967 Chevelle Intake Fuel Lines
The instruction manual explains in detail how to put the fuel lines together. The only difference here is that we used screw-type hose clamps instead of the spring type that came with the kit. The vacuum lines were all bought at the local parts store.
