1968 Chevy Nova Exhaust System Suitable Location
Once we got our electric exhaust cutouts from Quick Time Performance, we trailered the Nova over to W&W Auto & Truck Repair, where Walt Klikus handled the installation. He started by finding a suitable location for the cutouts in regards to clearance and fitment. The perfect spot was found 21 inches back from the headers and just inside of the subframe connectors.

Once the cutouts were measured against the pipe, Klikus took a Sawzall to our newly installed aluminum exhaust system and hacked away. He cut less than the length of the cutout to facilitate a perfect fit.

The 3-inch diameter exhaust cutout forced us to open up the cut ends of the exhaust pipe larger than their 3-inch diameter. Once opened up, we slid .25-inch of the cutout into both ends, thus keeping us from having to flush-weld the cutout to the pipe.

Klikus then broke out the Miller TIG welder and securely welded the cutouts in place. Once the welds were cool, he brushed off any residue and then hit each welded joint with a liberal coat of Plastikote high-temp silver paint.

On went the solenoids and blades. Each mounted to the flange welded onto the cutouts. Once in place and tightened, Klikus connected the wires and ran them along the framerails, up the firewall, and into the cabin via a drilled hole in the firewall right in the foot well area.

1968 Chevy Nova Exhaust System Switch
After connecting the ground wire to a shifter bolt and the power lead to a key-on power source, the switch was temporarily mounted (via a zip tie) to the shifter pedestal that is in the car. Future plans call for an aluminum box to be built around the shifter, with the cutout, water pump/fan, and fuel pump switches to be relocated there.

1968 Chevy Nova Exhaust System Burnout
While we weren't able to get to the track and see what the car would do with the exhaust closed and open, we figure that with the horsepower increase afforded by the exhaust cutouts in their open state, a noticeable improvement in both elapsed time and speed are to be expected.

1968 Chevy Nova Exhaust System Dyno Chart
With the new exhaust on and the cutouts closed, the Nova cranked out 354.9 (corrected) rear wheel horsepower through the mufflers and full exhaust. After a short cool down between dyno pulls, we cracked open the cutouts, slammed down the loud pedal, and were rewarded with a 365.9 reading. That's an increase of 11 horsepower just by pressing the toggle switch to open the cutouts. A dyno glitch caused a problem with the torque readings, however. All testing was performed by Chris Winter at Crazy Horse Racing on a Dynojet chassis dyno.
