1963 Split Window Corvette Passenger Front Side View
NHRA Record Holder, Comp Eliminator racer, and Sonny Leonard customer Vinnie Deceglie drove his Jerry Haas-built '63 split window Vette A/Altered to the Competition Eliminator title at last year's season-ending NHRA World Finals using a gas-burning, carbureted, 649-cid version of the 815-inch, mountain-motor IHRA Pro Stock engine. Deceglie, running on a 7.23 index, ran 6.59/211 in the semis and a 6.62 in the final round to secure the win. Wonder how fast that Vette would run with three stages of nitrous and an 815-inch engine under the bonnet? How about six-O?

This engine looks nothing like the big-block Chevy we're used to working with. Note how the spark plugs go right through the top of the valve cover. No header pipe problems here.

It takes a serious block to handle the torque and horsepower of an 800-plus-inch engine. Sonny designed this block and had it built by the folks at Donovan. This aluminum block features raised camshaft journals, a roller bearing for the crank snout, more head studs per side than the everyday Chevy big-block, and is plenty beefy to allow for engine combinations from 650-800 ci.

One look at the combustion chambers of Sonny's hemi confirms that the intake and exhaust are 180 degrees apart from each other. That's a hemispherical configuration, folks. It is obvious from this photo that the chambers aren't hemispherical, however. According to Sonny this chamber makes more power than a true hemi.

Check out the physical size of the Chevy "Hemi" heads. Real hemi heads have to be big and the plug has to be in the middle.

This view of the trick billet aluminum roller rocker arms is awesome. If you want an engine with cool parts inside, you don't have to go any farther than this king-size Rat.

The studs sticking out from the deck of Sonny's block look like a forest. There's little chance that you'd push out a gasket with this many fasteners holding down the heads.
