Legendary Small Block
Shoot Out-L79 vs L46 vs L82
The 350hp L46 350 offered the best overall peak and average power, but the L79 327 was not far off. The L46 produced 351 hp and 393 lb-ft of torque to 345 hp and 381 lb-ft of torque offered by the smaller 327. The cast-iron intake and SMI Quadrajet seemed to be the match for the factory aluminum high-rise and Holley, with the displacement being the deciding factor. Knocking two full points of compression out of the L46 by replacing the domed pistons and 64cc fuelie heads with 76cc 882 castings produced the L82. The 9.0:1 compression dropped the peak power output to 313 hp and 355 lb-ft of torque. The high-compression engines just felt snappier on the dyno, offering much better throttle response to go along with their improved power outputs.
