Cylinder head's flow figures have more effect on cam selection than any other product. If you've chosen the right heads, you can select a cam that'll match their performance where you need it. You wouldn't want a head in your daily driver that flows great at 0.800-inch lift any more than you'd want a cam that runs best at 8,000 rpm.

While most cylinder head companies will be happy to give you their flow figures, you'll probably have to do the percentage calculations yourself, so here's the formula: exhaust flow / intake flow = IvE ratio.

Once you've selected your heads, get their flow figures from their maker or get them flowed on a professional bench, then take the flow figures to the cam manufacturer and tell them what you want your engine to do. They should be able to help you pick the best grind.

Intake manifold choice also affects cam selection. A good dual-plane will give an engine an operating range from around idle to 6,000+ rpm, so you'd want your cam's power band to follow that.

Oiling issues almost meant the demise of solid roller tappets on the street. But cam companies like Crower, (shown), and others have addressed the low-speed street oiling problems by designing ingenious tappets with pressurized oiling grooves in them to keep the lifters alive at low idle speeds.

Rocker arm ratio can play a big part in cam performance too. When you're running a flat-tappet cam, increasing the rocker ratio mimics the changes you'd make with a roller lobe. Cam companies will often grind roller lobes specifically to work within a certain rocker arm ratio envelope to make the best power.
