Due to the durability and compact size (4x4 inches) of the MEFI controller it can be mounted almost anywhere. The mounting point of choice was below the upper intake plenum, as seen here.

Located on the right side of the upper plenum is the GM-style MAP sensor. MAP stands for "manifold absolute pressure." This particular MAP contains a vacuum nipple, which goes into the plenum, sealed by an O-ring. Internally, the MAP sensor contains a vacuum sensitive potentiometer, thus sending a signal based off of a five-volt reference to the MEFI controller. At idle, vacuum is high; under load, vacuum decreases. Based off of the readings of the MAP sensor, throttle position sensor, and oxygen sensor, the computer can calculate and correct necessary variable outputs for the timing and fuel injector pulse.

The first thing is to disconnect all items leading to upper plenum, along with all bolts holding the upper plenum to the lower intake manifold. Westech technician Ernie Mena will now remove the plenum from the engine in order to access the MEFI controller.

Here's a shot with the plenum removed. Notice the plenum to intake gaskets have ripped. Be sure to have an extra set on hand with a project like this. Carefully lay all wiring to the side in order to access the MEFI.

When changing over from the MEFI 3 to the MEFI 4B, a pin-out change is required. Carefully remove the connectors from the controller and follow the instructions. This may be the hardest part of the transformation. A pin-out may be intimidating, but it's not too bad with a basic understanding of automotive wiring.

Now for the fun part: Once the controller was mounted and all necessary wiring was complete, the upper plenum was reinstalled. All connections were re-established and it was time for some dyno tuning. It's always smart to do a few dyno runs to get a baseline before doing any tuning.

Here's a shot of the dashboard contained in the InGenius software. The dashboard is a configuration of real time data for items listed. To the left is a column of options, which you can enter to make necessary changes. Be advised, unless you have vast tuning experience, make small changes at first. A drastic change in the wrong field can cause detonation and/or serious engine damage.

The new controller cured our no-start issue. Then it was time for the tuning. Ernie makes changes between dyno runs via a laptop computer. Changes are based on info logged from the dyno run. The main importance is to monitor the air/fuel ratio, and keep it within a safe range (generally around 12.8:1 on a naturally aspirated engine) while achieving maximum power and drivability.

Pictured here is the baseline dyno graph before any tuning. This bright yellow bombshell pumped out 290 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque at the wheels, not exactly what we're looking for. The air/fuel ratio checked in at an extremely rich average of 11.8:1. Keep in mind that chassis dyno results will show a power loss through the drivetrain (typically around 23 percent with an automatic transmission).

GMPP MEFI 4B Engine Controller Tuning
Pictured here is "after" graph, a dyno pull after all adjustments have been made. Our power jumped up a whopping 74 hp and 121 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels (364 hp and 468 lb-ft). These numbers were achieved by merely leaning out the fuel mixture to approximately 12.8:1, and adding a slightly more aggressive timing curve. Not bad for a little tuning and a relatively clean set of hands. Hours could have been spent gaining every last ounce of power, but this is a 91-octane pump-gas tune for a street-driven '57. Sometimes ponies are left on the table for reliability and drivability.
