Next, we removed the cotter pin and fastener holding the outer tie-rod in. Beyond removal of the outer tie-rod, we progressed to the brake caliper-mounting hardware to ready removal of the brake caliper (set the caliper to the side for now).
1987 Monte Carlo Ss Suspension Backing Plate
We removed the dust cap to gain access to the spindle nut. The cotter pin must be removed first and then the nut can be spun off in a counter-clockwise motion, allowing removal of the brake rotor and bearings. Beyond removal of the brake rotor, the backing plate can then be removed via the three fasteners holding it in place (the backing plate will no longer be used).
1987 Monte Carlo Ss Suspension Control Arm
The spindle is now turned to gain access to the stabilizer/sway bar end link, which will be removed. Once both end links are removed, the sway bar can be taken from the vehicle (it won't be reinstalled). Next, we put a slight load under the control arm via a jack. This is critical when removing the spindle so the coil spring does not let loose (creating a potential trip to the hospital). It is now time to remove the cotter pins and fasteners holding the upper and lower A-arms to the spindle.
