Once the lower plates have been removed the axle housing can be lifted off the leaf springs and supported with a second pair of jackstands. We prefer to put the stands under the brakes, outboard of the springs, because when you're lying on your back under the car nothing cuts your scalp faster than the jackstand's support pins and sharp metal edges.
