After carefully disassembling the carb, into the bucket of Gunk it went. Although we could clean the carb using a few cans of spray cleaner, we prefer the dip method because we can do other things while the carb soaks. Always wear safety glasses and heavy rubber gloves when working around carb solvent.

Holley Carburetor Mineral Spirits
After the parts soaked for a few hours, we washed them in fresh mineral spirits to clean off the stinky carb solvent. Then we blew air through every passage to make sure nothing was blocked. By this time the mineral spirits were too dry to hurt our skin, but we definitely kept our safety glasses on when blowing the parts out.

Old carbs often warp, but this little trooper showed no signs of crooked play when we checked it with a machinist's rule. Always check diagonally across both sides of the carb. Anything more than about 0.020-inch gap means the carb needs to be milled flat. Don't try to file it, spend a few bucks to have a machine shop fly-cut it.

Holley Carburetor Double Pumper Carbs
The secondary linkage rod is often misadjusted and either won't close the butterflies all the way or, in the case of double-pumper carbs, won't open them all the way. Check secondary operation and bend the link accordingly. We had to tweak it some to completely close these secondaries.
