Next Tom removed the cotter pin and nut retaining the tie-rod end to the spindle. He then installed this special tie-rod end puller in order to facilitate a headache-free removal of the tie-rod ends. Once the tie-rod ends were disconnected, Tom removed the two lower bolts, which hold the shocks in place. Considering many of these bolts have not been removed in years, we did not encounter any major issues along the way.

It was time to remove the cotter pins and loosen the nuts, which fasten the upper and lower ball joints to the spindle. Be sure to leave ball joint nuts on hand tight, catching a few threads so the spindle does not separate prematurely, causing spindle damage or a call to 911. Tom employed the use of a spin jack to hold the suspension in place and a separation fork to separate the ball joints from the spindle.

Tom will now remove the upper shock fastener and shock. With the aid of Joe Bontempo, Tom removes the spindle and hangs it to the side. The spin jack is slowly lowered enough to carefully remove the coil spring.

BBC assigned technician Tom O'Neill to perform the dirty work on Project Homewrecker. Tom owns a '73 Corvette, amongst other projects, so he felt right at home under our '72. After taking inventory of all the new components to be installed, Tom began by putting the Corvette on the lift and pulling the front wheels. Once the wheels were off, Tom removed the upper nut for the sway-bar end link and proceeded to drive it out with a hammer. In severely rusted applications it may be easier to cut them out with a torch.
