The classic styling of the ’55 Chevy will never go out of style. Just when you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to ’55s, some ingenious shop or inspired home builder puts together a shoebox Chevy that sets a new standard for building one. The canvas that Harley Earl and his design crew gave us provides almost limitless possibilities for customizing and painting. It was no wonder that sister magazine Street Rodder chose a ’55 to be its 2011 Road Tour car.

At first glance, you might not think this "plain brown wrapper" El Camino isn't worth featuring compared to the rest of the cars on these pages. You'd be mistaken though, because beneath its Midnight Bronze paint and silver painted rally wheels lies a very unique car.

Chevrolet announced today that the suggested retail price for the 2014 Chevrolet SS sports sedan is $44,470, which includes a $995 destination charge. Title and license fees are extra. The SS will go on sale at the end of 2013.

It's official. Chevrolet has just announced that its all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray with the LT1 6.2L V8 engine will produce a whopping 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm with the available performance exhaust system. Corvettes equipped with the standard exhaust system are SAE-certified at 455 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.

It's not surprising that the new Corvette Stingray will be the pace car for the 2013 Indianapolis 500-you almost had to expect it. What is a bit shocking is that this is the 12th time it's paced the big race since 1978, and no replicas will be offered for public consumption.

It's called the Pure Stock Drags and it emphasizes maximizing what the factory gave you.

Many car enthusiasts dream of one day taking their cars to the limit at the historic Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah. However, The Flats, the name given to a 45-square mile area of flat barren land coated with a salt crust, are rapidly deteriorating. Located where Lake Bonneville once existed, the salt crust is rapidly depleting and today only about an inch of salt remains. The Bonneville Salt Flats have served as the location for numerous Land Speed records, and are a vital part of the history of American automotive performance. Every so often, Mother Nature tries her best to keep a Super Chevy Show from happening. She will turn on the rain and laugh that we gearheads missed out on an opportunity to show off our rides. Such was the case for the 2012 Super Chevy Show held at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas. A pretty serious storm rolled over the track late on Friday, so Seth Angel, the track manager, made the decision to cancel the Saturday portion of the event, including the highly-anticipated cruise from Ron Craft Chevrolet.

Last year marked Original Parts Group's (OPGI) 30th anniversary of being in business. "We couldn't have achieved the past 30 plus years of restoration excellence without support from our awesome group of loyal customers," said OPGI President and Founder, Dave Leonard. "So what better way to show our customer appreciation than with a car show?"

It used to be if you wanted air conditioning in a non-A/C-equipped car, you had to install a “knee knocker” under dash unit that stuck out like a sore thumb and only provided decent cooling for the front seat passengers.

Drum brakes were a design that started way back when automobiles were just coming around. Times have changed, but drums are still a cheap, lightweight option, so they can still be found on the back of brand new vehicles. Back in the day, drums worked just fine when life was a bit slower and everyone else was stopping on drums. Somewhere in the mid-'60s, the car manufacturers figured out the disc brake design was far superior and by the '70s pretty much all cars were fitted with disc brakes up front. Then brakes started to get smarter with the advent of anti-lock technology. Now the roads are littered with all kinds of cars that can stop way better than any drum brake-equipped muscle car.

Camaro Z/28. This was the car that essentially turned on an entire generation of drag racers to the thrill of road racing. Conceived in Detroit and dedicated to the proposition that all Mustangs must be defeated, the Z/28 gave Chevrolet the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am Manufacturers Championship in 1968 and 1969, and made a hero out of a young racer named Mark Donohue in the process.

Brian Smith's Great Aunt Emma bought this Impala new in Reno, Nevada, in 1963. Like many an Impala back then, it was powered by the reliable-yet-unremarkable 230ci six/Powerglide combination. It served her well for 11 years until she gave up driving. Aunt Emma, a retired schoolteacher at this point, turned her baby over to Brian's mother, who made it her daily driver until handing the keys to Brian when he got his license in 1977.

In 1956, the award-winning Broadway musical comedy Damn Yankees debuted about a long-suffering baseball fan who sold his soul to the devil so his team could find success against the New York Yankees. The DOT racers at Maple Grove Raceway and Richmond might wonder if the same dealings might be at play with this mid-8-second '56 Bel Air, as the car continually gets quicker and faster every year. A subsequent investigation found, however, that dark forces have less to do with how well this car performs as much as hard work and a few well-chosen parts and pieces.

The Mojave Desert has seen a lot of things. It's where America's first jet aircraft flew in 1942. Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier there in 1947, while the SR-71 Blackbird surpassed 2,000 mph years later. With its flat, natural runways and near perfect year-round weather, it would make sense that this was the place where many memorable breakthrough's would occur—and where some of the earliest seeds of hot rodding would take root.

Chevrolet took the wraps off the 2014 Camaro at the New York International Auto Show and surprised the crowd by showing the all-new Z/28. This name has been missing from the Camaro lineup since Chevy brought the ponycar back in the spring of 2009. The new car is stripped down for lighter weight, has a revamped suspension and the outgoing Corvette's LS7 427 small-block. Chevy's claiming it'll lap a road course 3-seconds a lap quicker than the current ZL1, and if that's true, it's not only the greatest handling Camaro ever, but will put its track performance on par with many supercars from Europe and Japan. The 2014 Camaro models feature a revised exterior design that integrates high-performance aerodynamics for more efficient cooling and stability at high speeds. The new Camaro Z/28 also features a full aerodynamics package that creates downforce at speed, which helps make it the most track-capable offering in Camaro's history.

Chevrolet made headlines last october when it introduced the Gen V small-block V-8 to the media, the first application of which will be in the all-new ’14 Corvette. The Gen V, which for reasons that could only make sense to those employed by GM, it is called LT1. It has neither reverse-flow cooling nor Optispark. What it does have is pretty much every trick the engineers could think of, from Active Fuel Management and variable valve timing to direct injection. Displacement remains at 6.2 liters, there’s only one cam and there are two valves per cylinder. Horsepower (as of this writing) is estimated at 450, same for the torque, though it could come in somewhat higher by the time production begins. Fuel economy is said to be the best ever for a Corvette, which right now is EPA rated at 26 mpg on the highway.

Bristol is always one of our favorite stops on the Super Chevy Show series. Every year the car show field is packed, the racing action at the strip top notch, the people are great to talk with, and overall it’s just a really good time.

A lot of things have taken place in the last couple of years that have could heralded the death knell of the performance V-8 in a factory-built car. Ever tightening emissions standards, brutal government mandated increases in CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requirements, skyrocketing gas prices, and a sluggish economy are not on the side of an automaker keeping a big V-8 in its production lineup. Thankfully we have those at GM who relish a challenge against the most iconic engine platform ever, and take pure pleasure in defeating the enemies of factory V-8 performance in brutal smack downs of horsepower and cubic inches.

In the first installment working with our 402 big-block (9.5:1 compression), we swapped out our factory oval port, cast iron heads for a set of alloy heads from Trick Flow Specialties. Without changing anything else on the engine, going to the better flowing heads netted us a 30-plus horsepower increase.
