The classic styling of the ’55 Chevy will never go out of style. Just when you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to ’55s, some ingenious shop or inspired home builder puts together a shoebox Chevy that sets a new standard for building one. The canvas that Harley Earl and his design crew gave us provides almost limitless possibilities for customizing and painting. It was no wonder that sister magazine Street Rodder chose a ’55 to be its 2011 Road Tour car.

It's not surprising that the new Corvette Stingray will be the pace car for the 2013 Indianapolis 500-you almost had to expect it. What is a bit shocking is that this is the 12th time it's paced the big race since 1978, and no replicas will be offered for public consumption.

If you wanted to have a great drag race, but hide it from the world, you might well pick the Mid-Michigan Motorplex, tucked away in the potato fields of north central Michigan. But its here that virtually stock (a few minor mods are allowed) muscle cars of all types and sizes gather for an annual assault on the quarter-mile. It's called the Pure Stock Drags and it emphasizes maximizing what the factory gave you.

Many car enthusiasts dream of one day taking their cars to the limit at the historic Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah. However, The Flats, the name given to a 45-square mile area of flat barren land coated with a salt crust, are rapidly deteriorating. Located where Lake Bonneville once existed, the salt crust is rapidly depleting and today only about an inch of salt remains. The Bonneville Salt Flats have served as the location for numerous Land Speed records, and are a vital part of the history of American automotive performance. Chevrolet took the wraps off the 2014 Camaro at the New York International Auto Show and surprised the crowd by showing the all-new Z/28. This name has been missing from the Camaro lineup since Chevy brought the ponycar back in the spring of 2009. The new car is stripped down for lighter weight, has a revamped suspension and the outgoing Corvette's LS7 427 small-block. Chevy's claiming it'll lap a road course 3-seconds a lap quicker than the current ZL1, and if that's true, it's not only the greatest handling Camaro ever, but will put its track performance on par with many supercars from Europe and Japan. The 2014 Camaro models feature a revised exterior design that integrates high-performance aerodynamics for more efficient cooling and stability at high speeds. The new Camaro Z/28 also features a full aerodynamics package that creates downforce at speed, which helps make it the most track-capable offering in Camaro's history.

Chevrolet made headlines last october when it introduced the Gen V small-block V-8 to the media, the first application of which will be in the all-new ’14 Corvette. The Gen V, which for reasons that could only make sense to those employed by GM, it is called LT1. It has neither reverse-flow cooling nor Optispark. What it does have is pretty much every trick the engineers could think of, from Active Fuel Management and variable valve timing to direct injection. Displacement remains at 6.2 liters, there’s only one cam and there are two valves per cylinder. Horsepower (as of this writing) is estimated at 450, same for the torque, though it could come in somewhat higher by the time production begins. Fuel economy is said to be the best ever for a Corvette, which right now is EPA rated at 26 mpg on the highway.

Bristol is always one of our favorite stops on the Super Chevy Show series. Every year the car show field is packed, the racing action at the strip top notch, the people are great to talk with, and overall it’s just a really good time.

A lot of things have taken place in the last couple of years that have could heralded the death knell of the performance V-8 in a factory-built car. Ever tightening emissions standards, brutal government mandated increases in CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requirements, skyrocketing gas prices, and a sluggish economy are not on the side of an automaker keeping a big V-8 in its production lineup. Thankfully we have those at GM who relish a challenge against the most iconic engine platform ever, and take pure pleasure in defeating the enemies of factory V-8 performance in brutal smack downs of horsepower and cubic inches.

In the first installment working with our 402 big-block (9.5:1 compression), we swapped out our factory oval port, cast iron heads for a set of alloy heads from Trick Flow Specialties. Without changing anything else on the engine, going to the better flowing heads netted us a 30-plus horsepower increase.

Unless you have been living under a rock, then you already know there are many benefits to running electronic fuel injection on your engine. If you are reading this mag from under a rock, then we will just tell you that EFI does the same basic job a carb does, but it’s much smarter at doing it. We know that taking off something you are very familiar with—for example, the carburetor—and replacing it with something computer controlled can take some gearheads out of their comfort zone. Yes, we are talking about adding a computer to the fuel system, but nowadays those computers are just little boxes with simple hand held tuners. It’s getting to a point that if you can use a smart phone, then you can use an EFI system.

"In 1961, Dick Harrell and I bought new Chevys, a 350hp, 3x2, 348 for A/Stock and a 409 (1-of-142) for Super/Stock. From Carlsbad, New Mexico, we ran at dragstrips in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Texas. The only thing on our collective mind was how to keep winning, plus go quicker and faster. We had no permanent crew. We split all costs 50/50.

Enthusiasts seem to be divided on just what constitutes a real street motor. On one side, we have the daily driver camp, where “street” is defined as the motor used to power your daily driver, as in the car you could jump in to take a transcontinental trip to visit grandma. Positioned to the far side of the daily drivers are those who take the term “street motor” more literally, as in, if it motors down any street, well then by God, it is a street motor. Never mind the cantankerous behavior, the tendency to overheat and the abysmal fuel economy—if it rolls, it tolls.

If you are one of the faithful who believe it's not really a Corvette unless the top goes down, the next generation Stingray convertible is on its way in the fourth quarter of 2013. Introduced today at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, the 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible is the most advanced ragtop in the model's history. The old timers in the congregation will remember a time in the early 1950s when just putting the top down was an arduous undertaking. Keeping the elements out with the top up was no joy either, as water and air leaks were common all the way through the end of convertible production in 1975. Well, the C7 promises to be best sealing, easiest to use and most technologically advanced Corvette convertible ever. It's coolest features have been seen before, but usually on much more expensive foreign luxury cars. For the first time on a Corvette, the top can be raised or lowered using the key fob, and the top can be opened or closed on the go, at speeds up to 30 mph.

Bracket racer, highway cruiser, or show car. Mike Meyers’ LS1-powered Corvair is all this and more. It’s reliable, fast and gets outstanding fuel economy. As a bonus, in a sea of first-gen Camaros and ’70 Chevelles, it stands out as something completely different.

While on the outside Tobie Johnson's '66 Nova might just look like a simple stocker with some wheels bolted on, if you looked inside this fabulous Deuce, you'd find the heart of a thoroughbred. D&Z Customs owner Randy Johnson found this Aztec Bronze Chevy II for his wife as an early birthday present. After only a few drives on the stock suspension, Tobie knew changes needed to be made if the Nova was going to live up to her expectations.

If time really goes faster as we age, then maybe one can understand how Tim Harper's Tri-Five is as fast as it is. For this '55 210 is not only quick, but it also blew by almost every other Super Chevy Show DOT class car in 2012—and still shows no signs of slowing down.

The last time Chevy had a five-passenger car for sale with over 400 horsepower it was called the Chevelle SS454 and it packed the 450-gross horsepower punch of the LS6 big-block. Starting in the fourth-quarter of 2013, you'll be able to purchase its spiritual successor, the 2014 Chevrolet SS, a V-8-powered, rear drive sedan with 415 net horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. It's Chevy's first V-8/RWD sedan since the '96 Caprice and Impala SS, finally filling a void in the lineup that was a real sore spot for Bow Tie enthusiasts.

Even though the Holley LS Fest has only been around for a few years, it has gained quite a loyal following and continues to grow. The 2012 event marks the third for LS Fest and proved to be a huge success with tons of action in every corner of the Beech Bend Raceway Park facility, located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Whether you like drag racing, autocross, car shows, drifting or dyno competitions, LS Fest had it all and kept us quite busy when it came to covering all of the action.

One of the best things about visiting Castrol Raceway on Labor Day weekend is the fantastically cool weather that gives us a welcome break from the sweltering summer heat we deal with through most of the season. Being able to look at some great Canadian Chevys without sweat dripping from our foreheads was a beautiful thing, almost as much as the cars we saw.
