The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is back as a 2019 model and it's ready to talk some serious smack to the exotic car segment. The 6.2L LT5 supercharged V8 engine is 52 percent more efficient than its predecessor (the LS9), allowing it to breathe easy and make heaps of power. This generation ZR1 is the most powerful yet, with 755 hp and 715lb-ft. of torque. The aggressive aero on the body of the car, rear wing, and downforce-enhancing front under-wing, though aesthetically pleasing, are entirely functional, keeping this 210-plus mph monster in check.
The impressive numbers are not the only exciting elements of the new ZR1. For the first time in 47 years, Chevrolet is offering a convertible option. Generally, convertibles handle differently than hardtops. Due to the lack of a roof and supportive pillars, the chassis must be heavily reinforced, which adds undesirable weight. Fortunately with this ZR1 convertible, it weighs in 60 scant pounds heavier than the coupe.
According to Chief Executive Engineer, Tadge Juechter, "Thanks to the strong structure, the suspension tuning between the coupe and convertible models is identical, meaning the ZR1 convertible offers the same benchmark performance, including a top speed of over 200 mph."
Based on the height of the rear wing, Chevrolet offers two different aero packages on the 2019 ZR1. The Low Wing option has a slightly higher top speed, while the two-way adjustable High Wing option, caters to increased downforce during track use. The advanced aerodynamics are the results of the ZTK Performance Package.
The ZKT Performance Package includes a front splitter with carbon-fiber end caps, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 summer-only tires, and Magnetic Ride Control tuning for greater cornering grip.
The ZR1 will still be offered in a 6-speed manual, and for the first time ever, an 8-speed, paddle-shifted automatic. Chevy has not released any numbers yet, but a low 3-second 0-60 time should be possible. After a little math, that results in a 10-second quarter mile, indicative of a true hypercar.
The 2019 ZR1 Convertible and Coupe go on sale in the Spring of 2018 starting at $123,995 and 119,995 respectively.
