Chevrolet hit the performance engine nail on the head decades ago which has led to them powering countless custom cars, trucks, hot rods, racecars, and everything in between. The LS, LQ, and LT engines are a go-to power plant for many builders today and for the 7th year, Chevrolet is sponsoring the Performance Challenger Series. If you own a LS or LT based car and want a chance at some bragging rights and prize money, this is the series for you. The first event will be held in Commerce, Georgia at the 10th Annual NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals at Atlanta Dragway on April 5.
The vehicle requirements vary between categories which include mild modifications to fully built performance cars running an LS or LT-based engine. Racers and crews spend the off season prepping and/or building their wheeled-weapons of choice with a wide range of Chevrolet Performance products to choose from.
"The series attracts young fans and enthusiasts who connect with turbocharged and supercharged street cars," said Steve Walczak, marketing manager for Chevrolet Performance. "Racers use an extensive portfolio of Chevrolet Performance engines, parts and accessories that help them win at the track."
Drivers are awarded prizes related to what parts they are using in their vehicles. The Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series will also showcase the DR 525 sealed crate engine. This is the only engine allowed to run in the Chevrolet Performance Stock Class (one of four other classes in the series). The other classes are: Street King, Rumble, Street Car Challenge, and The Real Street Shootout. Because these events run parallel to the NMCA Muscle Car Nationals, racers must participate in four of five races. Spectators will have a chance to enjoy all of the off-track features of the NMCA events like swap meets, and car shows.
The top three competitors from each class will receive and invitation to attend the Chevrolet Performance Champions Dinner at the PRI show in Indianapolis on December 8 to celebrate the best in LS and LT drag racing. The class champions and shootout winner will receive an LSX Victor award, a championship ring and a custom jacket.
