For the first three years of the Goodguys Editors' Shootout Autocross, the Camaro Performers magazine staff has been the only ones ever to take home the gold. This year was no exception. Camaro Performers magazine "One Good Turn" columnist, Mary Pozzi, was able to edge out the competition and nab the 2011 trophy in Del Mar, California, securing Camaro Performers magazine's fourth win in a row.
Regular readers of this magazine will recognize the mighty Mrs. Pozzi as the eleven-time SCCA autocross champion who pens a column on the last page of each issue. Mary's light-hearted look at life in the muscle car fast lane makes her column a standout read. But it's her impressive driving talent that defines Mary as one of the quickest autocross drivers in the country.
To make this year's competition equal, all sixteen editors were put behind the wheel of the same three cars for one lap around the Goodguys "peanut-shaped" autocross. Included were a Ford Mustang, Plymouth Roadrunner, and Chevy Camaro, all from 1968 vintage. The quickest average time of all three laps determined the Winner. Unlike the previous three Editor Shootouts, carnage was an issue at this event, so three different Chevys were driven before the breakage and clutch smoke had finally cleared.
"Basically, my strategy was to make sure I didn't hit any cones and get unforced time penalties," said Mary. "I figured by driving a bit conservatively while still being quick, I would be able to take the win. Fortunately, my plan paid off. I really want to thank everyone at Goodguys for putting together these autocross events and allowing us and everyone else the opportunity to take their cars out and have a good time. All that's left now is for me to figure out how to get Camaro Performers magazine editor, Nick Licata to speak to me again," joked Mary. "Hopefully by now he's over getting beat by a girl."
