Hey, we would be as excited as anyone to have a shiny new 2016 Camaro SS, but some people get a bit caught up in the moment and do stupid things that can really ruin their day, or worse, someone else’s. This was the case with an unidentified 36-year-old guy that was nailed doing 171mph by an officer patrolling the Duluth-Two Harbors Expressway in Minnesota last Friday evening.
“You get used to seeing people going 65 or 70 mph and what that looks like. But I've never seen anything like this. It's like a rocket on wheels at that point," Hermantown Police Department Deputy Chief Shawn Padden told the Duluth News Tribune.
The officer made a quick U-turn and needed to accelerate his Dodge Charger Pursuit car up to 135 mph just to get close enough for the speed demon to see his lights. "If he hits anything at that speed, a deer or whatever, it's going to end badly for the people in that car and maybe for someone else. There is no reaction time at that speed," Padden said. "That's the fastest I've ever seen" on radar.
When the Camaro driver, who had a young woman as a passenger, realized he was busted he pulled over to accept his consequences. The officer was nice than we’ve seen in many jurisdictions were stunts like this often involve an impounded car. His citation for misdemeanor careless driving could net him a max of 90 days behind bars as well as a $1,000 fine and loss of his license. This is why we prefer doing stuff at the track since, in the long run, it’s a lot cheaper long run and safer for everyone involved.
