The name Blackdog Speed Shop is a familiar one to Chevy High Performance readers when it’s associated with over-the-top cool feature cars, but how many of CHP faithful were aware of the Illinois company’s racing program in the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class?
Blackdog Speed Shop’s effort is based around a two-car team of 2016 Z/28R Camaros in the extremely competitive Pirelli World Challenge GTS class set to run at nine events spread across North America. These events usually consist of two 50-minute sprints launched from a standing start.
Team owner Tony Gaples and four-time World Challenge Driver’s Champion Lawson Aschenbach will pilot the team’s pair of semi-gloss black Camaro Z/28Rs in the GTS class. Gaples and Aschenbach recently tested their two Camaros at Circuit of The Americas, which will be the series’ opening rounds held March 5-6, 2016.
Blackdog Speed Shop has won the last three GTS Driver titles, Aschenbach in 2013 and 2014, with Michael Cooper in 2015. Gaples stated, “The 2015 season was another excellent one for Blackdog Speed Shop with another GTS Championship. We are ready to build on those successes by welcoming back Lawson to our team. It’s great to get the band back together. Lawson is a great driver and we look forward another awesome season in challenging for our fourth consecutive title in the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class.”
Blackdog’s fifth-gen Z/28R Camaro won three times in 2015. For the second year running the Camaro Z/28R is Blackdog Speed Shop’s car of choice only this time around, it’s the new sixth-gen Z/28R doing its bidding.
