The art of custom painting an object to express one’s individual likes has been around since the ancient French spat custom blended red mercury ore onto the walls of the Lascaux Caves from the world’s very first airbrushes. Okay so maybe it’s a stretch to call a hollowed dinosaur bone straw an airbrush, but the rest is sort of true.

Praise the lowered for gearhead TV; in the mid-20th Century custom painters were amongst the poor and infamous until script-driven reality TV shows elevated the strange lot into popular icons to be worshipped as a mainstream subculture, and salaried for their fame accordingly.
