Chevrolet has officially announced that the newest Corvette – the 2015 Corvette Z06 – will be revealed next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The Z06 has been a long time coming, with the rumor mill whirling since the unveiling of the base model Corvette and later the spy shots of Corvettes wearing camouflage. No word as to whether or not those were Z06s under all the covers, and the shot you see here is the only one they would supply us with.
Chevrolet assures us that the newest Z06 will be the most track-capable Corvette ever created, which has been designed to deliver supercar levels of performance thanks to unique powertrain, chassis, and aerodynamic features. There has been speculation that the Z06 may be supercharged, but that has not yet been released. Looking at the teaser picture we were provided with, we can also speculate that the Z06 will feature plenty of carbon and probably bigger brakes. The wheels appear to be ZR1-style and they are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, though we can’t say for certain if those will be standard or optional.
“Chevrolet is America’s favorite performance car brand, and for 2014 we are going to offer enthusiasts more choices than ever before,” said Alan Batey, senior vice-president, Global Chevrolet. “No other manufacturer will be able to match the breath of performance cars from Chevrolet.”
As the year draws to an end, it has become clear that Chevrolet has certainly hit the mark for 2013, selling one out of every four performance cars in the United States in the first eleven months of the year.
The Corvette and Camaro continue to lead their respective segments, with the 2013 Corvette outselling its closest competitor, the Porsche 911 – an incredible feat as Corvette production was halted for six months in order to upgrade the Bowling Green, Kentucky, assembly plant to build the 2014 Corvette Stingray. In November alone, Corvette sales has jumped 229-percent year-over-year, with demand for the new Stingray continuing to outstrip supply.
The Z06’s reveal will complete Chevrolet’s performance car lineup by joining three other new vehicles: the Corvette Stingray convertible, Camaro Z/28, and SS sedan.
The North American International Auto Show in Detroit runs from January 18th to 26th. Production of the 2015 Corvette Z06 is expected to begin in late 2014.
