Holley's very own "Uncle" Robin Lawrence will be returning to racing this fall with his 1969 Chevrolet Nova. Uncle Robin adopted the former Horsepower TV Super Nova project car with aspirations of competing in the NMCA Nostalgia Pro Street class with a nitrous-injected LSX engine. With help from Horsepower TV, Chevrolet Performance, and other sponsors Robin had the Nova running high-7s. Until this year the Nova’s personal best of 7.77 at 179mph had not been topped by another nitrous LSX (after holding the title for several years).
Since becoming Director of Sales at Holley, Robin swapped the dual 1,150cfm Holley Dominator carbs for Holley EFI and a pair of Dominator 2,000cfm throttle bodies. The Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) Launcher used to control the single Pro Fogger has since been negated by the EFI system. He hopes to run in the “7.4-second range” to put further distance between himself and the next fastest nitrous LSX, not to mention many very fast turbo cars. Robin said, “The goal is to compete in the Pro LSX class at the Holley LS Fest in September, which requires a 5.00-second 1/8th mile time to qualify. Recent testing has been positive and I’m confident as we continue to test as time allows. We expect heavy hitters at the inaugural Pro LSX class and it will be fun running with the big dogs.”
In addition to the Holley Dominator EFI system and 2,000cfm throttle bodies, the Nova also utilizes a Chevrolet Performance LSX block and DR cylinder heads with a Lunati 60mm camshaft as well as Jesel rockers, belt drive, and lifters. The sheet-metal intake manifold is courtesy of HRE, and plumbed for a single NOS fogger system. Fuel, oil, and water lines are plumbed with Earl’s Performance lines. A 25.2 chassis from Team Z Motorsports connects to a Quartermax rear housing, 4-link, and anti-roll bar. Motive 4.57 Pro Gear, 8-inch Ace billet clutch, and Liberty clutchless 5-speed make up the drivetrain.
