Chevrolet announced today that the suggested retail price for the 2014 Chevrolet SS sports sedan is $44,470, which includes a $995 destination charge. Title and license fees are extra. The SS will go on sale at the end of 2013.
The all-new 2014 SS is Chevrolet's first rear-drive performance sedan since 1996, and while it is derived from the Australian-market Holden Commodore, the SS itself is exclusive to the U.S. market. It will come well-equipped in only one model, with only two options: a power-operated sunroof for an added $900 and a full-size spare tire for an added $500.
"The all-new SS is engineered for performance enthusiasts who've been clamoring for a rear-wheel-drive sedan," said vice president of Chevrolet Marketing, Chris Perry in a statement announcing pricing. "Adding the SS to the lineup further solidifies Chevrolet's position as America's best-selling performance-car brand and completes a trifecta that includes the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray and Camaro Z/28."
Prospective buyers should know that standard equipment on the SS includes: high-intensity discharge headlamps with light emitting diode daytime running lamps; Automatic Parking Assist; Chevrolet MyLink with a color touch screen and GPS-based navigation system and a Bose premium audio system including SiriusXM radio (a 12-month trial). A color head-up display and color driver information center along with dual-zone automatic climate control and alloy pedal covers give the cockpit of the SS an edgy appearance, while heated and ventilated front seats with memory are designed to keep the driver and passenger comfortable. Side Blind Zone Alert and Lane Departure Warning, along with rear-vision camera with rear park assist make driving the SS even more effortless. The keyless access and push-button start are cool features as well.
Under the hood sits GM's LS3, 6.2L small-block V8 which is SAE certified at 415 horsepower and 415 ft-lbs of torque. It is estimated that the SS goes from 0 to 60 mph in approximately five seconds. The SS is also equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted manually using TAPshift paddles mounted on the steering wheel.
MacPherson strut front and multi-link independent rear suspension geometry with an electronic power steering system (optimized for sport driving), and standard Brembo front brakes, with ventilated, 14-inch two-piece rotors and four-piston calipers assure that the SS rides and drives like a dream. Forged aluminum wheels round off the classy look of the SS while ultra-high-performance Bridgestone tires keep the SS glued to the pavement.
All SS sports sedans will be equipped with Jet Black interior. Five exterior colors will be offered - Mystic Green, Silver Ice Metallic, Red Hot 2, Phantom Black Metallic and Heron White.
Unfortunately, the SS will be subject to a gas guzzler tax. Chevrolet will update pricing information when the charge is determined.
