The LT1 6.2L V-8 Will Churn Out Over 450 hp in the New Stingray

If you're a fan of the Chevy Corvette, the new Stingray should really tickle your fancy. Just announced, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will pack a 460 hp (465 lb-ft of torque) LT1 6.2L V-8. Cruising at 26 mpg on the highway, the engine is the most efficient and powerful to-date. The Stingray's LT1 engine is the fifth generation of the small-block engine family, which debuted in the Corvette in 1955.

"The 2014 Corvette Stingray's LT1 engine is a triumph of advanced technology," Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer, said. "Delivering more power and torque than ever before with greater efficiency."

At 74 horsepower per liter, the LT1 has greater power density than the C6 Corvette's LS3 6.2L engine (420 hp) and even the C6 Z06's racing-derived 7.0L LS7 (505 hp). To achieve the SAE certification for being the "most powerful standard engine ever," and still reach fuel efficiency in the mid-20 mpgs, the LT1 uses direct injection, active fuel management and variable valve timing.

Direct injection ensures a more complete burn of the fuel in the air-fuel mixture by use of a precise control of the mixture's motion and a more direct spray into the cylinders; it also allows for a cooler combustion chamber, which can lead to an increased compression ratio. These attributes can reduce emissions up to 25 percent.

The Active Fuel Management (AFM), or cylinder deactivation helps save fuel by gradually shutting down half of the engine's cylinders in light-load driving. Continuously variable valve timing is refined to support the LT1 AFM and direct injection systems to further optimize performance, efficiency and emissions.

Other new technology engine details:

  • -New cylinder-head design.
  • -New, sculpted piston design.
  • -Oil-spray piston cooling and available dry-sump oiling.
  • -Engine-mounted, camshaft-driven fuel pump to support the direct injection system.
  • -Intake manifold with "runners in a box" design that allows for high-efficiency airflow packaged beneath the Corvette's low hood line.
  • -High-flow, four-into-one exhaust manifolds based on the design of the LS7 engine.
  • Expect the 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe on sale this fall, starting at $51,995, and a convertible by the end of the year.
