On the Block
Cruising the auction results from Mecum and eBay, here’s what caught our attention …
1969 Camaro RS/SS 350
With ’69 Camaros still surfing high on the popularity wave, it’s nigh impossible to find a great deal on one, in any condition. Well, we found one. This Daytona Yellow RS/SS350 rolled across the Mecum stage in Kansas City, and when the gavel banged, it went to a new owner for a mere $22,500. Everything’s original except the engine, which is a brand new GM crate motor, and it’s a factory A/C car to boot. Considering the price lesser ’69s bring, this one is definitely a great buy.
1967 Camaro SS 396
While ’67s are not as popular as ’69s, they’re still great looking cars, and first-gen Camaros nonetheless. This ’67 went across the block and sold for $37,500. Is that a deal you ask? Well, first, only 4,003 325 HP SS396 cars were built in ’67, out of 220,906 total. Plus, this car has disc brakes, four-speed trans, buckets with center console, and a tilt column. For a turn-key, ready to show and enjoy classic Camaro, it would be tough to beat it at this price, especially if you want to stand apart from the dozens of ’69s that usually show up everywhere.
Cruising eBay, we decided to go away from Camaros. Who doesn’t like a classic Impala, right? This ’66 looked to be a great buy at $8,750. We say looked, because you never know for sure till you see a car with your own eyes. The seller lists the car as a non-SS, with a strong running original 327, and a Powerglide behind it. The only issue listed is some minor rust in the trunk floor that needs patching. Everything else is original, and the car’s advertised as never having been in an accident. For the asking price, it seems like a good deal.
1957 Bel Air Hardtop
For someone looking to start a Tri-Five project, this ’57 on eBay could be the right buy. A Bel Air two-door hardtop, it is described as being fairly solid, with a clear title showing only 30,000 miles. No motor or trans, it is just a rolling shell with interior. Otherwise, all the trim and other stuff looks to be intact and savable, and the usual areas where Tri-Fives like to rust appear clean. For $5,900, you could probably turn this into a streetworthy Rat rod shoebox for under $10K, then rebuild it from there however you’d like.
ACES Chevelle Club and Chevellabration Shutting Down
Just before going to press with this issue, we got some sad news from Super Chevy contributor and longtime industry veteran Chuck Hanson. Because of several factors, including the tough economy and an aging membership, the decision has been made to shut down the American Chevelle Enthusiasts Society car club, and along with it, the annual Chevellabration car show.
“Some may have seen this coming,” Hanson told us. “Certainly those that have been laid off or currently suffer from being under-employed know that no matter how hard you try, or whatever means you employ, some things are just out of your control. And while ACES has succumbed to a multitude of contributing factors, most prominent are an aging demographic, and a floundering economy. Both were significant in our decision to pull the plug.”
