I just read your April article and it hit home with me for sure. I usually make winter upgrades to the Malibu and as the years pass by, the projects get more involved and more expensive.
Last winter was the new 582 BBC, glide, custom headers, etc. This winter I took on the project of replacing the old 8.50 ’cage with a 25.3 spec chassis. Of course that project has grown from a ’cage upgrade to a new rearend, new wheels, all new sheetmetal floors and tubs, new fiberglass doors and trunk lid, new fuel system, new dash, gauges, wiring, etc. Heck, I’m even considering stripping the body for new paint it’s almost painful.
Anyway, I’m a couple hundred hours into this deal and am wondering if it’ll be done for this coming season. I work a full workweek, then put in another 24 hours per week working on the Malibu’s fabrication. I started the beginning of November and am still plugging away. I just wanted to let you know this plague affects us all laughs.
It’s always good to hear from a fellow radial tire buff. The Malibu looks great and we both know the end results will be well worth it. I always go back to the old saying, "If it was easy, everybody would be doing it." Good luck to you, Todd, and hopefully we’ll catch up with you at the track one of these days.
Unfinished Business, Part II
Thanks for the editorial and it was much needed, especially since I’ve been looking at my ’65 SS every night that it has been torn apart (over a year now; no lie).I’m trying to figure out how I can put this back together. Reading your words was timely, as I have contemplated selling my car, but everything is powdercoated and primered and just waiting for the journey back together.
Now that the football season is officially over (my Steelers lost, dang it!) it’s time to get back on it. I just want to say thanks, your editorial put a bit of a fire under me. I love my ’65 SS and it was my first project and my first, Chevy. Thanks for all you guys do for us out here.
A little motivation goes a long way and we’re glad to hear you’re excited to get back in the garage! Good luck and keep us posted with your build.
I would first like to say I’m a three-year (plus/minus) member of your magazine, and at 21 and being a college student, the last thing I want to do is read, but every page gets covered!
In the top left corner of page 64 in the "Southern Fun" article (Apr. ’11), there is a black and silver early ’70s El Camino that I have struck complete interest in. I have always loved old Elcos and I had to settle for less by building an ’83 C10. Is there any info on the car, pictures, or general info? I see it has a type of aluminum tonneau cover. My C10 is going the Pro Touring route and I am very interested in its ’cage, chassis, etc. I would really appreciate any response, even if there is no info or pictures.
I am also a co-owner of a small fab shop in Connecticut with my older brother, and we also build many rollcages, and I’m proud to say that the final results turn out really clean, along with the rest of the car.
Attached are a few pictures of my project; let me know if I’m heading in the right direction. When money decides to show up on my doorstep, I’m going to graph a C5 Corvette front end and drop an LS powerplant in it. So far, I have not purchased one fabricated part, including the tubular A-arms I made for it. Thank you very much.

As for the ride you’re inquiring about, that’s Spectre Performance’s ’70 El Camino. We’ve already shot the car for an upcoming feature, so keep an eye out for it as we’ll detail everything from the powerplant to the complete chassis.

I’ll start things out by saying I hate to shop. Yeah, I know hate is a strong word but I really despise malls/plazas, and avoid them with a passion. Anything to do with the thought of it chills me to the bone. It’s the hoards of people, the endless lines of cars in the parking lot, and the seemingly similar design layout of a Las Vegas casino--you can’t get out.
It’s comical how uninterested I am when it comes to purchasing items at a mall. On the other hand, if you asked me to go shopping for some new camping equipment, hunting rifles, fishing boat, or ATV, I’m all for that. I’ll even drive and probably buy lunch, too! If only there was a place where I could shop for the things I like and need all in one place.
Turns out, there is. Just outside Los Angeles (about 70 miles) sits the mecca of all things great. It’s a store where I can find everything my little heart desires, and I recently discovered it by chance. Could it be the store of all stores? I think so. It’s called Bass Pro Shops. I know what you’re thinking; the square footage of this place is unreal with two floors of endless bliss and what seems like its own weather system. It’s got everything I could ever want a store to hold. Need to buy a new, top-of-the-line bass boat? That can be done with their full showroom, where you can take 10 more steps and completely outfit it with all the gear, too. How about a pair of camouflaged overalls? Heck, it’s even got a live freshwater tank with catfish the size of German Shepherds. Does a part-time position get an employee discount program?
Bass Pro Shops is downright awesome. And although I would never give up what I do now, I’ll have to work harder, save up a small fortune, and make a holiday out of it. Don’t bother sending a search party if I don’t return. Lock me in for all I care; I’ve found my new home.
GMPP LSX Series for 2011
GM Performance Parts (GMPP) announces the LSX Challenge Series. It is a four-race points series for the 2011 racing season, culminating with the 5th annual LSX Shootout, to be held in conjunction with the NMCA World Street Finals, October 6-9, in Indianapolis.
The LSX Challenge Series represents a major expansion of drag racing with participants using strictly GM production-based LS and GM Performance Parts LSX engines and engine components. Race dates and locations for the 2011 LSX Challenge Series and LSX Shootout include:
NMCA season opener at Bradenton Motorsports Park, Bradenton, Florida
NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, Georgia
NMCA World Street Finals/LSX Shootout at Indianapolis Raceway Park, Indianapolis, Indiana
The other race of the series takes place September 9-11, during the Holley LS Fest at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. An agreement with LS Fest organizers allows racers to follow the rules and classes of the LSX Challenge Series, with points awarded during it applying to the championship.
The LSX Challenge Series will include several racing classes, similar to those used in previous LSX Shootout events, including:
- LSX Drag Radial
- LSX All Motor
- LSX Real Street
- LSX Rumble (Index)
- 5th-Gen Camaro Challenge (Index)
Racers competing for the championship must participate in three of the four races, with the LSX Shootout (Indiana) as a required event. The results of each race will be tracked throughout the season in NMCA’s Fastest Street Car.
