•With the excitement of seeing our Dart 372 sitting on the stand, almost too much to handle, our Project Crossfire Z had its tired and grungy old 140,000-mile heart ripped out for the repower. Unfortunately, sticking your sparkling new powerplant into your tired ride requires a bit more than an afternoon hose-down. If you want to do things right, it's also a time to be prepared for plenty of instances of "while you are at it." Such is the case when we prepared to tackle our first engine swap task of changing the Camaro's motor mounts. While the clamshell style of mount is quite reliable, the thought of leaving them intact was inconceivable, though I'll admit it did cross my mind given the reality of what it takes to replace them. But while we were at it, disassembling most of the front suspension to access the nuts on the engine mount bolts, we dialed up BMR Fabrication for a set of their fabricated tubular control arms and complete front coilover kit. Shaving 29-plus pounds from the front of the car, the kit offers you the ability to adjust ride height from 2 to 3 inches and also improves upon the stock geometry by positioning the springs farther out on the control arm, parallel with the front struts. This increases the suspension's leverage and emulates a true McPherson strut system, where the spring is coiled over the strut.
