The new-for-2016 Camaro is a lighter and faster iteration of the venerable Detroit performance car. The aftermarket is already learning how well the Camaro’s 6.2-liter LT1 engine responds to the usual hot-rod tricks. The crew at Hooker BlackHeart Speed Exhaust immediately tore into a sixth-gen Camaro to find ways to add power. The welds on their shorty tri-Y headers had barely cooled before the ambitious folks at Hooker invited us up to their Bowling Green, Kentucky, facility to capture the ins and outs of installing their BlackHeart Tri-Y Shorty Header on a brand-spanking-new Camaro.

BlackHeart’s shorty headers (PN 70301304-RHKR) for the sixth-generation Camaro feature 1 7/8-inch primary tubes in a tri-Y arrangement for a broad torque curve across the powerband, mitered merge collectors for maximum scavenging, and bolts up to the engine and exhaust without any modifications. Like all Hooker BlackHeart Speed Exhaust parts, these shorties are manufactured from lightweight 18-gauge 304 stainless steel material.

Hooker’s resident installation guru Alan Pendley showed us the ropes of the installation.

1 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 2/23

01. For 2016, GM introduced its lighter and faster Camaro. It’s a perfect slate for modifications, and the crew at Hooker BlackHeart Speed Exhaust tore into theirs immediately to find ways to add power.

2 2016 Camaro Hooker Blackheart Shorty Headers 3/23

02. BlackHeart’s 1 7/8-inch shorty headers (PN 70301304-RHKR) for the sixth-generation Camaro bolt right up to the engine and exhaust without any modifications. Like all Hooker BlackHeart Speed Exhaust parts, these headers are manufactured from lightweight 18-gauge 304 stainless steel.

3 2016 Camaro Dual Mode Exhuast Valve 4/23

03. Installation guru Alan Pendley showed us the ropes of the installation process. The OEM exhaust on the 2016 Camaro is one complete piece, so Pendley began by removing the dual-mode exhaust valves from the mufflers.

4 2016 Camaro Support Bracket 5/23

04. After dropping the central chassis crossbrace, Pendley removed the support bracket that’s attached to the bellhousing, and the four oxygen sensors.

5 2016 Camaro Exhaust Removal 6/23

05. After releasing the exhaust from its hangers, Pendley removed the eight bolts that fasten the exhaust to the OEM manifolds and lowered the exhaust system.

6 2016 Camaro Disconnect Steering Shaft 7/23

06. To provide a little extra working room, Pendley disconnected the steering shaft from the steering rack.

7 2016 Camaro Ac Line 8/23

07. After removing the engine covers and airbox, Pendley disconnected the air-conditioning line support brackets from the chassis in order to snake the headers into the engine bay.

8 2016 Camaro Spark Plugs Manifold 9/23

08. He then removed the front two coil packs and all the spark plug wires and plugs.

9 2016 Camaro Exhaust Manifold 10/23

09. After removing the five bolts securing the OEM manifold to the head, there were no issues pulling it from the engine bay.

10 2016 Camaro Exhaust Gasket 11/23

10. The OEM multi-layer gasket still looked good, so we set it aside to reuse with the Hooker BlackHeart header.

11 2016 Camaro Coolant Line Removal 12/23

11. Moving to the passenger side, Pendley pinched off and disconnected the coolant hoses from the surge tank before removing it.

12 2016 Camaro Coil Packs 13/23

12. Next, he removed the front three ignition coils, all the wires, and spark plugs.

13 2016 Camaro Exhaust Manifold Removal 14/23

13. With everything out of the way, Pendley removed the OEM manifold bolts, manifold, and the dipstick tube.

14 2016 Camaro Hooker Blackheart Shorty Headers And Stock Manifolds 15/23

14. With everything out of the way, Pendley removed the OEM manifold bolts, manifold, and the dipstick tube.

15 2016 Camaro Hooker Blackheart Shorty Header Install 16/23

15. Starting on the driver side, Pendley used the OEM gasket and bolts to secure the BlackHeart header.

16 2016 Camaro Hooker Blackheart Shorty Headers Plug Wires 17/23

16. Because of the headers’ larger-diameter and longer-length 1 7/8-inch primaries, Hooker sells these low-profile, 45-degree plug wires that fit better than the OEM pieces.

17 2016 Camaro Hooker Blackheart Shorty Header Install 18/23

17. Moving over to the passenger side, Pendley first installed the gasket and loosely installed the header with only the center bolt then fished the dipstick tube back into place before installing the remaining four bolts. (It helps to have a friend guide the dipstick home from under the car.)

18 2016 Camaro Coolant Surge Tank 19/23

18. After tightening the header bolts, Pendley installed the spark plugs; ignition coils; low-profile, 45-degree wires; coolant surge tank; air-conditioning brackets; airbox; evaporative system lines; and engine covers.

19 2016 Camaro Hooker Blackheart Shorty Header Install 20/23

19. Back under the vehicle, Pendley installed the supplied bolts and the original nuts that secure the BlackHeart shorty headers to the OEM exhaust.

20 2016 Camaro Hooker Blackheart Shorty Headers Oxygen Sensor 21/23

20. Next up was to install the support brackets, hangers, dual-mode exhaust valves, and the four oxygen sensors.

21 2016 Camaro Dyno 22/23

21. With the installation wrapped up, the crew put the Camaro back on the dyno.

22 2016 Camaro Hooker Blackheart Shorty Headers Dyno Chart 23/23

22. With the only change being the Hooker BlackHeart Speed Exhaust shorty headers, the Camaro registered peak numbers of 414 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque, with maximum gains of 8.59 horsepower and 7.3 lb-ft of torque and solid gains across the rpm range. We expect the gains to increase with further exhaust modifications. Not too bad for shorty headers!
