Nothing can ruin your day faster than losing your power steering after a high rpm start. Blowing the V-belt off the power steering pump isn’t an uncommon problem. Back in the day, Chevy compensated for the problem by manufacturing a deep groove power steering pulley to replace the stock pulley on high-performance engines. The basic configuration is identical to the stock pulley and is a direct replacement. The stock pulley V-groove is approximately 0.384-inches wide by 0.455-inches deep. The pulley supplied on most of the high-performance engines of the day measured 0.463-inches wide by 0.530-inches deep. The extra width and depth allowed the V-belt to ride lower in the pulley and prevented the belt from climbing up the edge of the pulley and falling off.
The pulley was generally included on the Chevelle, Camaro, El Camino, Impala, and Nova from 1965 through 1972 with the high-performance designation. The pulley came in several sizes, but the most common application was 6 inches in diameter with a 5/8-inch shaft bore. You can see in the two accompanying pictures how the V-belt rides in the stock versus the deep-grove, high-performance pulley. As you can see, the belt rides somewhat lower in the pulley mounted on the pump compared to the pulley in the vise. I’m hoping you can help me with my dream project. I have a 1967 Chevelle I bought some time back without the engine. I recently found the buildsheet in the car. I also have the original invoice, which indicates it originally came with a 350-horse, 396 engine. It does have the four-speed trans, but I’m going to look for a 396 with numbers that would match the original engine. Could you help me with the numbers I need to look for? Any help would be appreciated.
Nice score, Mel. Let’s see what we can do. First of all, I would look for a casting number on the block of 3902406. The casting number will be on the driver’s side on the rear of the block. Secondly, I would look for the block pad on the front right and try to find a suffix code of either EF or EG. It may be a little harder to find a matching code on the engine pad but an example would be T0416 followed by either EF or EG (e.g., T0416EG or T0416EF).

EF or EG = 350-horse 396.
The first letter could also be F, K, or V for other assembly plants: F for Flint Motor Facility, K for McKinon Industries, V for Flint Engine Plant. The code EF or EG will be the last two letters on the block pad and indicate a 350-horse 396 with either a three- or four-speed trans. The cylinder heads should carry a casting number of 3904390. The number will be under the valve covers in the middle of the head. Good luck on your search.

Long-time reader but I haven’t needed help until now. I am restoring a 1968 El Camino. I am having a hard time finding a few interior parts. My local supplier either doesn’t carry or can’t find a few plastic pieces. I have found a few used parts, but they are just that—used up. Specifically, I am looking for the storage box behind the seat. I am also looking for the plastic covers for the seat belt retractor. I was told I would have to purchase a complete seat belt kit to get the covers. Thanks for the help in advance.
Not sure where your supplier has been looking, Jim, but both parts are available through Original Parts Group. The storage box behind the driver’s seat carries PN RPR0260. Also, don’t forget the storage box seal that goes around the perimeter of the box opening and seals the opening to the body, PN CH28681. The seat belt retractors covers are sold as a pair under PN RCF-300. The retractor covers only come in black in a paint-to-match configuration.
