Tim Lee, owner of Don Lee Auto, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, has owned a lot of cars. Everything from a Corvair to a 1955 Chevy has populated his garage at one point or another. And while he's owned more than few Camaros, up until now none have been first-gens. Given this unacceptable oversight, he jumped at the chance to pick up a sweet, unfinished project car. The 1967 had been languishing at a shop after having a ton of work done. It was in primer with all the major body massaging done. A TCI suspension had been grafted under the Camaro and there was an LS1 sitting on the subframe. Other than that it was mostly blown apart and in boxes. Given its unassembled status, Tim got it for a song, and in short order he put together a plan: a fun-to-drive street machine combining classic looks and modern performance. The LS1 was moved to another project and in its place Tim built a 416ci LS3 stroker. Filled with forged Eagle rods pinned to Mahle PowerPak flat-top pistons, a forged Eagle crank, and a complete COMP roller valvetrain, it's an engine built to be run hard. The short-block was topped with RHS heads, and a Holley 850 Ultra HP carb was mated to an Edelbrock Super Victor LS single-plane intake. An MSD 6LS ignition system triggers the Granatelli Motorsports coil packs, while Holley valve covers neatens things up.
The combo was good enough to knock down 617 hp and 566 lb-ft of torque on the engine dyno. Backing up the engine is a worked-over Tremec T-56, which spins power back to the Currie-filled Ford 9-inch differential. Wilwood binders ride inside the 18x9 and 18x10 EVOD polished rollers wrapped in BFG KDW rubber.
Since Tim likes his rides to retain their classic vibe, he chose to paint the Camaro in retrolicious Marina Blue and kept all the vintage brightwork. He confined the modernization to the suspension and drivetrain. The interior will feature a Dakota Digital dash to track the engine's vitals and a Vintage Air A/C system to keep the occupants cool during the hot SoCal summers.
