2010 Camaro Sunoco Prototype Hits Block

One-of-a-Kind Racecar Available at Mecum

A one-of-a-kind pre-production 2010 prototype Camaro is headed to the Mecum Auction in Monterey, California, on August 16th. The car was built in-house by GM's Performance Group in 2009 as a factory homologation submission car for Grand American racing.

The fact that the Camaro was completely engineered and built in-house is a huge deal, as few manufacturers' "factory race cars" are, and even fewer ever make it to private ownership. This surviving Camaro was actually released just before General Motors' 2009 bankruptcy proceedings.

GM groups that took part in the project, which was built in the famed Building 27, include Chevrolet Marketing, GM Racing and GM Performance Division engineers, and Milford Proving Ground technicians.

The 6.2L LS3 crate engine was built following a blueprint by GM Performance Engine Center in Wixom, Michigan. Aerodynamics were fine-tuned by GM Aero Lab in their full size tunnel, while suspension tuning happened at the Proving Ground on the 7-post rig. The blue and yellow coloring was chosen by GM Design Staff to pay homage to the era in which Mark Donahue's iconic Sunoco Camaro dominated the Trans-Am racing series. GM Proving Ground test track, in Milford, Michigan, was the testing location for the finished product.

The prototype "Race Kit" package that the Camaro is equipped with features springs, Koni shocks, brakes, cooling aids, and other chassis bits. A Tremec TR6060 six-speed transmission handles shifting, and a lightweight carbon fiber hood, trunk lid, doors, fenders, and front and rear spoilers help the Camaro with weight-reduction. A C&R racing aluminum radiator and three-inch exhaust system with Coast Fab mufflers are attached to the seam-welded, body-in-white/roll-cage structure.

This Sunoco Camaro made its public debut in 2008 at the SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada, before serving as the original submission car for an ongoing negotiation process with the Grand-American series officials. Unfortunately, the impending bankruptcy and possible cancellation of the program pushed GM to protect the car by quickly selling it to Riley Technologies. It was there that the car paved the way for a successful "production" run of Grand-AM and SCCA World Challenge approved Camaro race cars.

The car in question has remained as originally shown by Chevrolet, has never been raced, and is still under the private ownership of Riley Technologies. Documentation with the car includes the bill of sale and a photo album of step-by-step build details.
