Crowning The Super Chevy 2008 Car of the Year - Top 10
Joe Cherry, 1958 El Nomado January 2009 Your memory is fine and you're not hallucinating. Chevrolet never built a '58 El Camino. But Joe Cherry did. He started with a '58 Nomad wagon and, using a 2-door '58 Biscayne he had sitting around, began grafting the two together. Says Joe, "Grafting the two cars together and trying to maintain proportion was very difficult. The sedan part of the car extends from the doors to the center of the rear wheelwells. The Nomad's roof was cut, quartered, and chopped two inches."Most pieces had to be fabricated and/or modified to fit in places they were never meant to be. Even the glass was custom-cut. Power comes from the 348 that came with the Nomad. It's been fitted with the original Super Turbo-Thrust instake and a trio of Rochester two-barrel carbs. The entire cockpit is completely customized and features (among other things) air conditioning and leather upholstery. View Related Article
