1968 Chevy Malibu - Mainstream Muscle

Wait Until Next Year

This poor, unloved (until now) '68 Malibu has fallen into our hands, and we need to bring it back to life. Luckily, we're just the guys to do it, with a little help from our friends at Danchuk, Goodmark, Global West, and lots of others who will be seen as we make this car something to be proud of.

The plan is to make the body nice and smooth, put the best for-the-money suspension and brakes in it so we can drive it, drive it, and then drive it some more without worries about going around corners and bringing it to a safe stop. We also want to have fun in a straight line, so we'll be planting a big-block under the hood, along with a sturdy automatic. Of course, creature comforts are important, so we'll put in some nice seats, carpets, door panels, stereo, and A/C, but we won't be looking to kill any calves to get the material.

We were fortunate to find this car in an underground garage in California where it hadn't been exposed to harsh elements. But even with that going for it, we still found some panels that needed replacing, and the frame has a slight tweak to it. We'll fix it and show you how we did it.

If you're looking for the high-dollar trailer-queen Malibu, this ain't it. You might be surprised at how reasonably priced this car can be built. Sure, we're the magazine guys, and you may expect that we opt for the baddest, biggest-buck ride we can find. In this case, however, it's a car we can have fun with and show our readers what great parts are available without having to get a second job or win the lottery. We can't wait to drive it around and show it to you.
