•The 1982 Chevy Camaro was the first all-new restyled F-body platform introduced when I was of legal age to drive and in the financial position to buy one. I didn't at the time because I had just purchased a cherry black-on-black four-speed '78 Z28, but the thought did very strongly cross my mind and, once again in 1986 when Chevy introduced the IROC, I actually went down to the local Chevy dealer in Santa Monica, California, and took one for a test drive.

But even as much as I liked this body style, I always felt the third-gen Firebirds had a much cleaner nose on them. I never really cared for the Monza-style headlight cutouts with the quad rectangular headlights.

When asked what I could do with a Camaro of this vintage, the first thought that came to mind was bolting a Firebird front clip on it and welding in the Camaro's squared-off wheel arches in place of the Firebird's round ones to match the rear quarter-panels.

Of course I couldn't stop there, so I revamped the grille opening and removed the Firebird's disappearing light doors in favor of more Camaro-like headlight cutouts with plexiglass light covers to give back more of the original Camaro's frontal styling.

Now that I'm done, the car looks like a Skunk Works aerodynamic design study that might have escaped the crusher and ended up in some GM exec's hands. This should be an easy and a fairly inexpensive build to do given these F-bodies, both in Chevrolet or Pontiac flavor, are cheap and readily available. So if you've always wanted a factory concept car, here's an inexpensive way to have one sitting in your driveway. -Keith Kaucher
