Yup! That's what it says on his vanity plate-"MADNSS." Hawaiian Island Camaro's members Dexter and Elyn Kekua own this beautiful four-speed '68 Camaro SS 396, which was built by their son, 20-year-old Garret Tomita and then turned over to Masuda Fender for paint and Ricky's Custom Upholstery for interior. All told, the car took two years to build.
When rebuilding the '68 Camaro unibody, Tomita outfitted it with PST subframe connectors, Energy Suspension polyurethane body and suspension bushings, PST front suspension, Bilstein gas-charged shocks, and a 3.25:1-geared Currie Enterprises TrueTrac 9-inch rearend. The Camaro also features a Rock Valley stainless steel gas tank and a combination of Camaro front power disc and Currie Enterprises rear disc brakes. Kekua's yellow screamer rolls on 15x7 and 15x8.5-inch Billet Specialties Talladega wheels wrapped with 235/60x15 and 275/60x15-inch BF Goodrich Comp radial T/A rubber.
Sitting inside that highly detailed and flamed engine compartment is a Sallee Chevrolet/Larry Macklin-assembled ZZ502/502 with modifications to allow bolting up a Muncie M21 four-speed. The 502 is also outfitted with Crane roller rockers, an Edelbrock Performer dual quad intake and twin 650-cfm Edelbrock Performer carburetors, an MSD 6AL distributor, Hooker Super Comp headers (with 3-inch Flowmaster mufflers), a CSV mini starter, and an East Coast Electric 140-amp alternator. Engine cooling is handled by a Griffin four-core radiator, while its occupants are refrigerated via a Vintage Air cooling system.
Underneath that black and yellow upholstery (which is also in the trunk) you'll find Painless Wiring, a trick alarm kit, and window crank handle-activated power windows. Also along for the ride are a JVC SH772 head unit, Zapco six-channel amplifiers, an AG SP4 Zapco equalizer, a pair of Alumina Pro sunwoofers, and four Infinity coaxial speakers. Just why in the world would someone ever THINK that a guy could succumb to Island fever when he's got a Camaro this nice to drive around our 50th State?
