A garage-built 1955 Nomad Project

Family Planning: When your family grows, you need a ride ready to haul them around in style

Some projects are born out of wants, but many are forged from necessity. Travis Endy’s ’55 Nomad came about from a little bit of both. His previous ride was fine when he only had to worry about hauling around his wife, Kathleen, but the two-seater suddenly became less useful when the couple had twins. The solution was a rusty shell of a Nomad that had been sitting for 35 years. The good news was that rust is cheap, so the project only set Travis back $5,000.

In 2006, the Nomad was slid into Travis’ garage and the three-man operation to save the rotted Chevy began. The carcass was mediablasted in the driveway and then new panels started being grafted into place. Nomad parts are a bit hard to find so many times coupe sheetmetal had to be manipulated to get the job done. The chassis was equally rotted so a replacement frame, from Fatman Fabrications, was sourced and outfitted with drop spindles, a four-link rear suspension, and a quartet of QA1 shocks. To stop the wagon, Wilwood binders were added to each corner. Work continued on the car over the next four years when Travis had the cash, and the time, available. After a three-year break to build up some funds, work started up again on the ’55. Mixing new with old, Travis opted for a carbureted Chevrolet Performance ZZ4 crate engine, backed up by a TREMEC TKO-500 five-speed overdrive trans to motivate the Nomad.

Eventually the ride was ready for paint and the Axalta Cromax Chromabase Ingot Silver paint was applied. Since paint, the Chevy has been receiving a steady stream of performance parts and a huge amount of product from the Danchuk catalog.

Dave’s Interior Restorations in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, will handle the interior, which will feature yards of red leather, AutoMeter gauges, and Vintage Air HVAC. To finish off the project, Travis plans on running Billet Specialty Dagger wheels (18-inch front and 20-inch rear) wrapped in BFG rubber. By the time you read this, the long-term project should be on the road and ready for a full feature in Super Chevy, so stay tuned.
