Old Daze

I fell in love with cars at an early age, and the muscle machines of the '60s and early '70s only intensified those feelings. In my opinion, one of the best parts of being a car nut is the history we share. Whether you built your first ride in the 1950s, the 1980s or 2010, we each possess an appreciation for the automobile, its mechanical wonders, and its capabilities.

Today, we take it for granted that you can hop in a car and comfortably drive coast to coast. Imagine what this journey would have been like in 1913 or 1813. Let the tree-huggers whine all day about the evils of the internal combustion engine; we know it has changed our lives for the better. Along the way, the motor vehicle has woven its way into American culture. Whether it was Lucille in her merry Oldsmobile, the Beach Boys revving up the 409, or Prince and a Little Red Corvette, the automobile is part of the fabric that makes up this country.

This month, we bring you four pages of vintage reader photos. Some of the pictures have just cars, others have their owners in them. The inspiration for this was when my youngest son found a picture of me with my '69 Corvette in 1983 (shown here in all its embarrassing glory). He about rolled over on the floor when he saw those shorts. Of course, he's too young to understand about fashion trends. Shorts, hemlines on skirts, blue jeans, etc., change all the time. Today's baggy pants are just the latest take on yesterday's bell bottoms.

To prove that Father Time has perverse sense of humor, we bring you some unusual photos on this page. Here, Super Chevy contributors Mark Lundquist, Doug Marion, and your faithful editor, pose with their rides, then and now. As the late Howard Cosell would say, "Truly a sight to behold!"

Your author in July of '83, after washing his newly purchased '69 Corvette. The ink from my college diploma was barely dry when I bought the 350/350-horse Stingray. Car had an M21 and 4.11 gears from the factory—and nothing else. That's me with Project Homewrecker, my '72 LT-1 coupe, in July 2013. Shorts are longer, forehead's bigger, waistline's larger. Oh, well.
