Super Chevy Show: Vegas Baby!

By Calin Heal, Photography by Narisa Masermsin

Las Vegas is a destination that offers all kinds of things to do. Want to see disappearing tigers? Go see a show. Want to stuff your face till you pop? Just hit a buffet. Want to test your luck and try and win some money? Well, you can do that anywhere in the city limits—even at the airport!

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby 1978 Luv Truck
One of the coolest looking drag car award winners was Scott Bisel from Lake Havasu, Arizona, and his very clean ’78 Luv truck. Underneath that slick blue all steel body is a full tube chassis and the blown 368ci small-block propels the truck to 9.06 e.t.’s.

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby 1963 Impala
This long and low Impala had a nice surprise sitting underhood in the way of an all-aluminum Brodix big-block. The ’63 belongs to Brian Smith from Las Vegas and we were so impressed we shot it for a feature. Look for it in a future issue.

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby Autocross Ls3
Troy Borgen was absolutely killing the autocross course until his supercharged LS3 dropped oil pressure. Troy towed the car home and found a faulty oil pump was the issue. The beautiful ’69 has a Magnuson supercharged LS3 backed by a T56 trans and 9-inch rearend. It rides on a full Ride Tech suspension system and an Intro wheels Michelin tire combo.

But if you want to see Bow Ties tearing up the asphalt then you needed to be at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to check out the Super Chevy Show Presented By Chevrolet Performance.

It had all the elements you could want; a show and shine, a swap meet, an autocross, vendors and let’s not forget the 1,320 feet of pure unadulterated gearhead heaven.

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby 1966 Chevelle
The father and daughter team of Jim and Nicohl Marino came to the show to race Jim’s sanitary ’66 Chevelle. Jim has driven the 555-powered car to a best time of 8.90, but its was dialed down to 10.70 so Nicohl could cut her teeth before running it unrestricted later on.

Door slammers, Pro Street, altereds and outlaws filled the air with the sweet smell of burnt rubber and race fuel while tearing up the drag strip. We gotta tell ya there are some fast vehicles in Vegas.

On the other side of the grandstands was the autocross course that was sponsored by Total Cost Involved, Currie Enterprises and Camaro5.com. The course was set up and run by the Las Vegas Region SCCA. These guys laid out a track that was technical enough to test a seasoned driver, but not so complicated that a beginner couldn’t give it a go.

If you have never tried an autocross you really should give it a try. These short courses are a great way to have some serious fun without risking too much. Unless you really do something wrong the worst thing that might happen is a little cone rash on your paint, but that will buff out. c

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby Black Camaro Byrd
The husband and wife team of Robert and Trish Byrd were there again this year, but this time they each had their own fifth-gen Camaro. Trish took the reins of the Hotchkis-equipped convertible. Robert took home the Fastest Fifth-Gen and Cone Killer awards, while Trish won the Fastest Female trophy.

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby Nova Jim Lippert
Another car we shot for a feature was this Nova owned by Jim Lippert. The car was fresh from the Bright Built Hot Rod Shop in Kansas and features an LS9 sitting underhood. Jim brought his four Novas and two other friends’ cars from Kansas in his 18-wheeler.

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby 1968 Chevelle
Another entertaining thing to watch on the autocross was Tom “B-Cup” Smith and his ’68 Chevelle. B-Cup said, “I built this car to have fun” and boy howdy was he. We think the Chevelle’s rear tires were up in smoke more than they were hooked.

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby 1971 Mote Carlo Ss454
For the second year in a row, Mike and Verla Bennington cruised out all the way from San Diego. This year instead of driving his ’57 coupe (with a Ramjet 350 crate engine), they rolled up in his totally stock ’71 Monte Carlo SS454. It still has the factory air suspension in the rear (and it works!).

  • Super Chevy Show Vegas Baby John Castro 1969 Nova
John Castro hauled his slick ’69 Nova from Torrance, California. John had a small crash at Fontana back in 2008, which prompted him to body work and repaint the car by himself. The clean paint and good looks, combined with the fact the car runs a 9.40 e.t., garnered him one of our Editor’s Choice drag car awards.
