For the third straight year, Texas Motorplex owner Billy Meyer, track GM Gabrielle Stevenson, and the entire staff at the Texas Motorplex pulled out all the stops to make this show something special. To fire up everyone’s patriotism, the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Wall was on display.
“The wall honors all U.S. servicemen and women in all branches of service and we are proud to be able to host the wall this week. It’s truly an honor for all of North Texas,” Meyer said. The Cost of Freedom Tribute includes statistics from each major U.S. conflict and 9/11 attacks, a 380-foot-long and eight-foot-high Vietnam Memorial with 51,000 inscribed names, a gold dog tag display, a tribute to law enforcement and firefighters as well as historical documents, for visitors to reflect on.
Adding to the veterans’ tributes was an opening day cruise from an old-school courthouse in nearby Waxahachie to the Motorplex. Everyone gathered around 8 a.m. for free coffee and a saugage biscuit breakfast before loading up and hitting the road to the show. Once on the show grounds, everyone parked their Chevys in their respective areas and did a quick clean up. The drag racing action started just a few minutes later, filling the air with the sweet smell of burnt rubber and race fuel. There were all levels of Bow Ties on the track, from 15-second bracket cars to electronics cars running mid 8s. And if that wasn’t enough, Elaine Larsen and her jet car team made a bunch of exhibition passes throughout the day.
Even though we could sit and watch the 1320 all day, there was still more to see, like the show cars and we are here to tell you the gearheads in Texas don’t mess around. There was a huge selection of high quality builds that really impressed. Chevy Performance blew us away with its Chevrolet First Responder Silverado. In partnership with renowned airbrush artist Mickey Harris, the Silverado features airbrushed murals, depicting different scenes of the fateful attacks on New York City and the Pentagon, along with a small piece of glass recovered from the Twin Towers site.
For the young ones there was the Revell Make-N-Take, which gives each budding gearhead a Revell model (Chevrolet of course) and a place to assemble it.
