It was a great gathering of Chevys in the Old Dominion for the 2011 Virginia Super Chevy Show.

Co-author Hill's journey to this year's Virginia Super Chevy Show started out somewhat auspiciously. As he tells it, "Happily resting with my eyes closed in first class (free upgrades rock, especially on early morning flights) I broke from my slumber somewhere over Georgia as the plane's engine pitch changed and a stewardess was busily gathering up everyone's beverages. 'Ladies and gentlemen, we've got a warning light on one of our engines, so as a precaution we're diverting to Jacksonville. Nothing to be alarmed about, we've just got the bad engine idling right now.' "

In True Street, it was an all-out quarter-mile melee between Tim Harper in the blue ’55 and Glenn Hunter Jr. in the ’56. It was close, with both drivers having two great passes to one “off” run. Harper came out on top for the second consecutive year, with a three-run 8.686 average to Hunter’s 8.688. Yes, 0.002 seconds decided this contest. Last year, Harper averaged 8.681-that’s consistency!

David Kissner brought out his giant killer for the weekend. While big-block Chevelles and Impalas were all the rage, the L79 Nova was the sleeper to beat. With its high-winding 350hp 327 and M21 four-speed, the Nova’s better power-to-weight ratio made it a potent dragstrip combatant.

"Being an airplane nut, I wasn't alarmed, but reasonably concerned considering the A320 I was on only had two engines.

"After a safe landing in the biggest city in Florida (by area), I luckily was rerouted to another flight that only had me behind schedule by a couple of hours. Unfortunately my bag wasn't, so my first night I just had the essentials--my camera, laptop, and iPod. Thank God for Target!

Super Chevy swap meets are great places to find vintage manuals and publications. Some of these aren’t reprinted by the aftermarket, so the only way to find one is to hunt it down online or at a show.

"Once Saturday rolled around though, I could see the good fortune of getting all the bad karma out of the way at the beginning of my trip. The whole weekend we had bright, beautiful skies and a dragstrip full of eager and excited Bow Tie fanatics. The swap meet was overflowing thanks to the handiwork of parts peddler extraordinaire Harry the Hat, the crew at Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP) had the racing surface prepped, and the concessions were awash with artery-clogging goodness. Freelancer and Virginia resident Rod Short lent his invaluable assistance in covering all the goings-on, and I was stalking the show car field for our next AMSOIL Best of the Best contestants."

How many fried Oreos can one associate editor eat? Fortunately my eating bravado was overridden by my common sense, so I'll never know. But I do know we had some cool Chevys to look at during the event, so I'll quit yakking and let you all check out the pics."

The Corvette Club of Richmond celebrated its 50th anniversary by coming out in force for the show. With over 80 cars in attendance, there was a lot of rolling fiberglass to look at. One that stood out was Duane Maloy’s ’90 ZR1. The production top dog of its day, the DOHC LT-5 cranked out 375 hp in its first year, thanks to Lotus-designed heads.
