The Camaro5.com 5th Gen Camaro Club came out in force to attack the autocross course and invade the car show area and dragstrip. There were V-6 and V-8 cars alike vying to see who could cut the quickest time around the autocross.

One of our Editor’s Choice drag car award winners, Casey Miles has been racing his original Z/28 since the earlier ’70s, first in the New York area, then in the Southeast. At one time the car was an NHRA record holder and it still runs its original DZ302 small-block.

Another one of our Editor’s Choice Drag winners, Rick McDonough’s Chevelle wagon not only caught our eye because it was as pristine a racecar as we’ve ever seen, but also because it was missing a couple of doors. Actually a ’71, Rick added the ’70 front sheetmetal along with performing door-removal surgery to make this two-door wagon a unique piece.

David Poxio’s ’68 SS396 is an original L78 car, but to give it a little extra oomph, David hunted down a set of vintage L89 heads and bolted them onto the Chevelle’s motor. On reproduction bias-ply tires, the car ran a 13.50 on the PBIR quarter-mile in a test and tune pass.

Outside of the expensive and hard-to-obtain COPO 9560 and 9561 cars, the baddest Camaro you could get in ’69 had an L78 396 between the fenders. Jack Hunter’s F-body came with a host of goodies (including the RS option) to make it one superb Camaro, good enough to make our AMSOIL Best of the Best competition from the event.

Making the long haul all the way from Virginia, George and Linda Keel had their bright-red ’55 turning heads all weekend. This car was built entirely in the Keel’s home garage and rivals the work of many high-end shops. Watch for a future feature on this car too.
