The editor of the magazine wanted to find the best Camaro in the neighborhood so they set up this competition. The cars competed against each other on the drag strip, autocross, and show 'n' shine. Bonus points were available if they went on the cruise that started at Spectre Performance in Ontario, California, and ended at Baer Brakes in Phoenix.Sister publication Camaro Performers held its Duel in the Desert competition at Firebird. Total Cost Involved, Wilwood Disc Brakes, and Currie Enterprises sponsored the autocross at Firebird and TCI had its test mule Camaro on hand to show off what their suspension components could do. These suck One of the non-Camaros that rode along with the Duel-in-the-Desert guys was Kyle Newman in his '55. This car is all Vette underneath and super cool. He fragged a U-joint on the drag strip, but nothing a trip to the local NAPA couldn't fix. He moved over to the autocross course and was able to click off a 23.84-second lap time. That was good enough for him to win the Open class for the Super Chevy Show.
