Super Chevy Show Topeka Series Chevy Cars

After the whirlwind of action at the Norwalk show, it was time to head west for the vast area of the Great Plains and Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas, for the next stop on the Super Chevy Show tour. I met up with Super Chevy's tech editor Calin Head to check out the show cars, drag action, and the hot laps being run at the autocross. The Corvette Club of Topeka was generous enough to come out for the weekend and manage the autocross, so everything was fun and safe. The club's Dale Long was nice enough to help other drivers with tips and tricks for running the course, in between driving his wife's C5 Corvette to the fastest times of the weekend. There are plenty of pictures of the cone dancing action later on in the story, with captions from Calin.

At the dragstrip, the Pro Mod racers were spicing things up for the quarter-mile show while the bracket cars rolled through like a rubber-burning army. In the car show area, competition was hot and heavy to take top honors in each Bow Tie class.

Around midday on Saturday, the skies turned grayish-green and the air temp dropped about 20 degrees in a matter of seconds, so we knew bad winds were coming. After Calin and I helped keep one family's E-Z Up from blowing away like Dorothy's house, we sprinted for the rental car, making it to safety just as the bottom fell out.

On Sunday, the local Hooters sent some of their orange short-shorts-wearing vision testers out to liven up the car show and pose for pictures next to the classic iron in the field. We snapped this picture of the girls next to Bill and Cathy Wamboldt's '55 gasser, testing out the right front fender. Watch for a future feature on this home-built retro machine.

This black beauty owned by Eric Garcia had more than a few people talking. The car has a 500hp 360 small-block backed by a Tremec TKO trans. What had them talking was the fact Eric decided to graft in a set of '69 taillights into the back of his '68. The car has other cool body tweaks like a modified spoiler, shaved drip rails, and real metal vents cut into the quarter panels.

Winning top spot in the Mote Carlo class was John and Elaina Parman's '87. This slick black Monte has all the goodies you would want, like a 383 stroker, TCI 200-4R, Hotchkis suspension, Moser 9-inch, 18- and 20-inch Americans, and a one-off stinger hood to name a few. The car was put together in John's garage except for paint and body, most of the parts being sourced from swap meets, eBay, and hand me downs. It came together with a tremendous amount of help and support from his wife Elaina, and friend Greg Cragg, along with many others.
