This particular Super Chevy show in Joliet, Illinois, stands out as one of the wilder, more actionpacked shows we've had the chance to witness. First off, the Chicago Outlaws were stacked 15 deep. Getting the chance to see more than a dozen of these freaks jumping like frog legs in a frying pan then running a 7-second pass, forget about it! Now that's action. The Chicago Outlaws racing crew only makes it to a select few shows and usually it's about five or so cars and not 15 madmen behind the wheel screaming wheels-up off the line.

If that wasn't enough to simmer your sausage, after the show was over, Saturday afternoon turned into a Saturday night to remember. Saturday Saturday night in the pits of Joliet was one of the most festive SC shows we've seen. Several musicians busted out their battle-axes, set up some lights and proceeded to play some righteous-sounding Chicago Blues. These guys were no cream puffs when it came to chopping out the hot licks on the guitars either. While the music was playing, the food was cooking, bottle tops were popping and they were dancing in the streets at the Route 66 Raceway. Racing and rock 'n' roll: Is there more than this?

When the rooster crowed and it was Sunday morning, there must have been plenty an aching head, with folks reaching for the aspirin bottle.

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! The car show must have had about a 100 more entrants than the day before. Forget the trophies, forget the accolades, come on out to the SC to have a ball and make some memories. We can't wait for next year at Joliet.

Yeah, yeah, nobody wants to hear about the weather at the Super Chevy Shows, but it was pressure cooker hot in Joliet! Many of the bracket racers we spoke with had a tough time dialing in the times on their vehicles on account of the rising mercury. Phil Cooper is no stranger to the Super Chevy True Street class. His '66 Nova ran an average of 9.93 seconds. His best run was 8.688 at 157.01 mph. We think the reason he didn't take the crown was that his bottle was empty on the last run.

Last and certainly not least is Steve Hoch with his sicklooking '68 Vette. This vehicle was beautiful in every way. Steve managed to keep his average passes at 10.17 seconds. His best of three was 9.19 at 148.12 mph.

The crown prince of the Joliet True Street shootout has to be Glen Hunter, who made the trip from Long Island, New York, with his '56 Chevy. After three back-to-back passes down the blacktop, Glen had an average time of 9.48 on nearly all three passes with a best top speed of 142.19 mph. He was only a tenth of a second off on his third run. Now that's some solid driving. Glen made the drive all the way from New York by his lonesome. One by one his friends and family all decided they had something better that weekend, and going racing in Illinois was not at the top of their list. Glen may have made the trip solo, but now everybody knows what his vehicle did that weekend. Hopefully after reading this he'll have some salt to rub in their wounds. Oh yeah, we also gave Glen an Editor's Choice Drag Race award as well. Double whammy!

Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye! The Super Chevy True Street competition will now come to order. We were pleased to see six sluggers hitting the streets for this event. We heard there were more vehicles signed up, but they must not have heard the call when it came time to hit the streets, or maybe they were eating Pork Butt on a stick, who knows. All six contenders ran around the local Illinois country roads soaking up all the sights the cornfields had to offer.
