One of the super righteous...
One of the super righteous rods we saw that weekend was sitting under the tent at the GM Performance Division's booth. It was love at first sight when we saw this '55 Chevy Herb Thomas stock car replica. Herb was already legendary for his victories in the Fabulous Hudson Hornet (along with Marshall Teague and others). However, in '55 Herb piloted a 1955 Chevy, which brought him to victory at Darlington in the Southern 500. With the then new small-block under the hood and Smokey Yunick on his crew, how could he not win?
It's tough knowing where to start when reporting on the Indianapolis Super Chevy show of 2007. Last year's event pulled in a decent amount of show attendees. This year's event was a bit different. Just three hours away in Columbus, Ohio, there was another major car show in full swing that same weekend. Undoubtedly many of the local area vehicle owners couldn't be at two shows at once, so they had to make a choice, which split show attendance.
While the show car side may have been lighter than usual, the drag racers are a different breed altogether, and they showed up in droves. But we already knew that, didn't we? A great number of the Indy drag racers had amazing looking vehicles, but they weren't there to look pretty. They were chasing glory! So naturally we had a hard time knowing when to stop taking action photos of the racers.
One thing about the Indy show that never disappoints is the humungous swap meet. There were piles of parts and a great amount of project vehicles for sale. The swap meet has got to be the worst part of the show for the editorial staff. There sits the part you need, and it's only 20 bucks! How do you explain to the TSA that they have just got to let you bring that '70 Nova cowl vent with you on the airplane? Take a look at some of these action-packed photos from the show.
I don't know about you, but...
I don't know about you, but for some reason I want to buy Bassani exhaust! Hubba hubba.

Speaking of NASCAR tributes,...
Speaking of NASCAR tributes, here is another car we fell in love with. Check out this 1972 Bobby Allison Monte Carlo replica. Complete with a 427 and Spartan interior we couldn't help but do a photo shoot with it as well.

Now here's something we don't... Now here's something we don't see very often. GM had a historical display of all its V-8 engines from the '50s until the present day. From Buick Nailheads and Stage 1s and Oldsmobile... | ...Rocket motors, to (of course)... ...Rocket motors, to (of course) all makes and models of the small-block and big-block Chevy engines. Behind the glass case sit three legendary 427s: the 1969 aluminum ZL-1 engine, a 1969 L88, and a... | ...1967 L71. It's a good thing... ...1967 L71. It's a good thing they were behind glass; we just might have found a way to fit them into our luggage. Also check out this 302 and cutaway LS2 engine. |
It must have been a hard day's... It must have been a hard day's night. We found this lady sawing logs right next to her '57 Chevy wagon and tear drop trailer, but aren't you supposed to sleep in the trailer? | Dig this Chevy. Mike Batjes... Dig this Chevy. Mike Batjes of Holland, Michigan, was showing off his 1961 4x4 panel truck. No need to guess that we liked it so much we gave him an Editor's Choice award.
Where were all the Chevy owners... Where were all the Chevy owners and why didn't they compete in this class? Brad Maynard seen here in the far lane entered his '99 Vette and won the competition with a three-run average of 11.76 (with an 11.65 best). Tim Boggs entered his '67 Nova, but after running 11.96 and 11.83 threw a fan belt after his second run. By the time he reached the staging lanes for his third run, coolant was puking out from his radiator. | Nick Licata, editor of Camaro... Nick Licata, editor of Camaro Performers, was crazy for this '83 Malibu wagon owned by Gary May from Indianapolis. Gary had her dialed in 10.92 in Bracket 1, but was eliminated in round 2. We gave him an Editor's Choice award for converting a 4-door wagon into a two-door and running it as fast as he does. | Check out Brian McLaughlin... Check out Brian McLaughlin in his '85 Camaro catching some air as he left the line. Brian did well that weekend and made it into the fourth round of Bracket 2. He was dialed in at 10.89 in the fourth round, but didn't make it. |
ProCharger was packing them... ProCharger was packing them in all day. The ProCharger race teams had some pretty wicked Camaros duking it out on the track. | Believe it or not, this odd-rod... Believe it or not, this odd-rod VW had a small-block sitting under the front hood. The more I look at this, the cooler it gets. The owner can definitely say it's one of a kind. | Tony "The Sandman" Williams... Tony "The Sandman" Williams didn't do so well that weekend. Right at the start line when he launched, his Nitro Coupe went right into the wall. Tony was unhurt, but his car needs some serious repair. He was doing pretty good this season till this happened. Hopefully we'll see him soon at upcoming shows. |
If you've seen them before,... If you've seen them before, then you know the Chicago Outlaws put on one hell of a show! These guys usually leave the line looking up at the sky. Tim Oros of Montgomery, Illinois, kicked some outlaw butt that weekend in his '69 Camaro and took the finals, winning with a 7.889 at 175.37 mph. | Even though Zach Barklage... Even though Zach Barklage didn't win that weekend in his Nitro Coupe, he had the lowest e.t. of the weekend with a sizzling run of 6.178 at 230.69 mph. The paint job on his car had to catch up to him at the finish line. Scott Palmer won the Nitro coupe crown in his '06 GTO. | It never fails. We see a car... It never fails. We see a car that catches our eye and we take a picture of it. But, to our dismay, the owner failed to put his name card in the window. The owner of this gasser-ish styled '55 will forever remain anonymous. |
Jonathan Arnold made it all... Jonathan Arnold made it all the way to the DOT finals in his unassuming looking '84 Camaro, but redlighted. He lost to Dan Wilhelm driving a Pu-Pu-Pu-Pu '69 Pontiac. | Here's Scott Palmer in his... Here's Scott Palmer in his '06 GTO with the chutes fully deployed. In the back Ken Walsh is trying to catch up. Some of you regular Super Chevy Show attendees may remember Ken "The Kid" Walsh and his frame-twisting Mr. 409 car. Ken has moved up into the big leagues and pilots a '63 Vette Nitro Coupe with a 409.
