This past July, New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire, played host to the Super Chevy Show Series, and what a show it was. Hot rods, musclecars, trucks, and race cars from all over the East made their way to the beautiful environs of eastern New Hampshire, for a weekend full of exciting racing and good, old-fashioned, four-wheeled fun.
Being a New England native (I'm a Connecticut Yankee), just heading back to the Northeast was a treat in itself. But adding the fun and excitement of a Super Chevy Show to the mix made this one of the best weekends I've had in a long time. I was pleasantly reminded of the quality of both the show and race cars of the Northeast, as well as the turnout and the friendly atmosphere that makes Northeastern rod runs so enjoyable.
As usual, the New England Dragway staff and the crews of Autostar and AutoZone worked their collective butts off to make sure everyone had a memorable time. The car show was an awesome collection of classic Chevys, with some of the nicest Camaros, Chevy IIs, Chevelles, Vettes, and pickups in the country for all to see, appreciate, and drool over. And the drag racing was, as always, a heart- (and ear-) pounding experience, as well. Sit back and peruse the images we brought back to share.
Chris Rice had his Second-Gen Chevy II primped and prepped to kick some butt on the track. This Nova looks as good as it goes. | This beautiful SS396 is the pride and joy of Ron and Sandy Walker of Peru, New York, and the couple has every right to be proud. | This stunning '58 Chevy, belongs to Ron and Norma Ducharme of Windham, New Hampshire. It won the ISCA Award of Excellence at the show. |
Litchfield, New Hampshire's, Russ Fontain has one heck of a nice '64. But don't let it fool you; this bad boy is a heavyweight quarter-mile contender. | Robert Place's flawless '58 drew a crowd all weekend. Actually, I gave up on getting a clean shot of it just because of that fact. | |
Tony Alleruzo of Middleton, Massachusetts, took the Best Pro Street/Engineered with this classy '70 Chevelle. | The judges said the winner of the Best Big Car award for the New England show was this clean '64 Chevy, owned by Mike Merzigian from Worcester, Massachusetts. | It may be wrapped in '32 Ford skin, but this adorable little lady insists that the blower tops a really small-block Chevy. |
Paul Gillis' wild '65 caught our attention right off the bat. This injected First-Gen is impressive, to say the least. | This wild El Camino is a real kick. Scott Lacasse's Gilford, New Hampshire-based beast is detailed to the nines, from the top of its bug-catcher to the tips of its tailpipes. | There were quite a few pre-'48 Chevys at this year's show. One fine example is this super-clean '40 Master Coupe belonging to Joel Kimball of Kennebunk, Maine. |
One of the nicest all-original cars at the event was Mark Gorham's nearly pristine '77 Monte Carlo. It's hard to believe that there are original cars of this caliber still out there. | Dennis and Debbie Cote of Middleboro, Massachusetts, won the Outstanding Street award with their exceptional '70 Chevelle. | One of our favorite race cars was Ted Jannetty's Waterbury, Connecticut-based, big-block-powered '70 Chevelle wagon. It's amazing how fast a heavy car like this can be, although we guess a full-house 502 helps. |
