A '95 LT1 out of a Z/28 Camaro powers this burgundy '55 owned by John Judt. It rolled in from Norfolk, NE, on 17-inch American TorqueThrusts and BFG Comp TAs.
"Build it and they will come," said the voice in Kevin Costner's head in the '88 movie, Field of Dreams, so he carved a baseball diamond out of his Iowa cornfield, and the legends of the game mysteriously appeared to play. The Chevrolet Nomad Association said, "Schedule it and they will come," so they planned the 13th Annual Nomad Convention for Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and they did come-162 CNA members who brought 86 customized and restored '55-56-57 Nomads.
Among activities scheduled for the convention week, July 16-20, was a road tour-two-lane only-to Dyersville where the Field of Dreams movie site welcomes 55,000 people a year. The best-known cornfield of all time is maintained by the land owners just as it appeared in the movie. But on this warm, sunny afternoon it was a colorful caravan of Nomads that arrived, instead of past baseball heroes. Dyersville had attractions of a more automotive nature, too, as it is the headquarters of the Monogram/Ertl model company, another miniature company, Farm Scale Models, and the National Farm Toy Museum. Another day on the schedule was reserved for visiting the unique shops and historical exhibits of the Amana Colonies.
The Nomad Convention schedule puts the show 'n' shine and people's choice judging on Tuesday morning. That gives members Monday to clean up their Nomads, and then they can drive and enjoy them the rest of the week without keeping them show-shined. Thursday evening's awards banquet found Ron Talcott of Akron, Ohio, and Bill Evans of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the spotlight. Ron's red '55 Nomad with an injected, supercharged 454 and literally dozens of refinements on Chevy's sports wagon styling statement was named People's Choice-Modified. On the other hand, Bill restored everything by-the-book original on his turquoise and ivory '55, and did it perfectly, to win People's Choice-Original.
The Nomad Convention moves east next year. It is scheduled for July 21-25, 2002, at the Tamiment Resort in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. For information on the convention and joining the club, contact:CNA8653 W. Hwy. 2 Dept. SCCairo, NE 68824
