Corvette Funfest 2000, held last September 16 and 17 in Effiingham, Illinois, was, without a doubt, the biggest Corvette-specific event ever! Bloomington, Carlisle, and the NCM's Labor Day events all draw 3,000 to slightly over 5,000 Corvettes, which is mind-boggling in itself. But, Funfest 2000 pulled in a totally unprecedented 8,230 Vettes, from 40 states and 12 countries, and an additional 35,000 spectators!
It's an answer to a question...
It's an answer to a question nobody asked. Seriously, the craftsmanship on this custom-framed, four-wheel drive '74-75 Corvette convertible was outstanding. Hey, different strokes for different folks!
There were two themes to Funfest 2000: a Millenium Yellow (the hot looking yellow you see on some '00 and '01 C5s) Celebration with a reserved parking area for all yellow Corvettes, and the Corvette Carnival. It's become a Funfest tradition that there'll be some sort of free entertainment on Saturday evening. Well, the Effingham County Fairgrounds (in Altamont, 10 or so miles from Mid America's facility) was taken over-rides, games, food, live bands, just about anything suitable for families-for the carnival. To top that off, two road tours of roughly 25 miles each through the southern Illinois countryside were organized, and an estimated 4,000 (that's right, thousand!) of the Corvettes in attendance joined in.
It's hard to begin to describe an event like this. Seeing more than 8,000 Corvettes of almost every vintage in one place, covering several acres, was incredible, as was the sight of multiple miles of America's Sports Car winding along twisty country roads. We'll have to settle for, "Wow!"
